TBH how many Gasheads can recall watching Rovers at a ground that felt like home or one that wasn't a dump, once the old Eastville South Stand burnt down and was not replaced we've never had a decent ground? Twerton felt like home even though it wasn't our ground it felt good being there, got some great memoreys. The mem I've never liked its the worst part of the match day expierence, it doesn't even feel like a football ground, the atmosphere if your not stood in the blackthorn end isn't great..... But im still getting a season ticket next week haha

OK! I will try to encapsulate various posters and comments, as I see it, in this post:
Gashead79 appears to be trying to be Devil's Advocate too often, to the point where it is annoying (to me anyway)!............. Red shirts anyone? (I would mention that I got my Gran to knit a blue and white/red and white scarf, that ended up about 30 feet long, when we played in red and white stripes as our away colours).
I do not think anyone would disagree that the Mem is below par for League One football, let alone Championship, but it is still better than a rented ground, 22 miles (approx.) from our spiritual home. However, it is not anywhere near as bad as many grounds for atmosphere, Trashcan for instance. The pure, overwhelming delight that Ricky Lambert's goal caused in the Paint Trophy semi-final exceeded even the hatred that the new kids on the block created at Trashcan on 14.9.13.
As an aside: One of the best football experiences I have had was in the Robins pub, when Rovers played Newcastle after Eastville got torched by some Spamheads: The Geordies had left home on the Friday night; gone to a disco in Brum; slept in their coaches overnight: arrived at the Robins (Ashton Gate for those who do not know) and then joined in card games with the Rovers fans who used the pub (me, for instance, being from the posh end of 'artcliffe). They were scheduled to get home around lunchtime on the Sunday: I asked them what their wives/girlfriends thought about those arrangements and got some strange looks, along with such comments as, "It's football"!"
Yatton: I get the impression that you are trying to impress/please a new wife? You mention "my 5yr old lad" and "my Mrs and her 10yr old daughter" That suggests to me that your reasons are outside of football and more to do with your relationship. I apologise if this seems personal , but it is what your posts express to me.
Long John Silver: The Mem may be awful but it still knocks spots off Twerton.

If I was trying to impress I would hardly choose Rovers ! The point I was trying to make was about picking up new fans or just the occasional fan who'd want a seat , good view, etc etc. The Mem doesn't cater for this and if we've pretty much sold all seats to season ticket holders for next season already all we can offer is terracing . At over 6ft myself I've often struggled to get a decent view at times when we've neared or reached capacity.

I was too young to remember anything other than the mem. Its where I fell in love with Rovers and I can't imagine being anywhere else. It may look horrid, have terrible facilities and a bumpy rugby pitch (for much of its history) but I will miss it. I'm sure those who mentioned Twerton and Eastville as being better have a similar connection. I'm glad tickets are selling well this year and I like to think that number will continue to grow until the new stadium is built. For me there is something special about our place but I couldn't explain what. In a confusingly sad way the 'ragbag' mem experience could soon be but a footnote in this club's successful future. Whatever happens I will be proud to say "I was there when..." Bang on with how I feel too. Yes the Mem's a bit of a dump, but it's our dump and it's unique, has history, character, a brilliant home terrace, and is surrounded by loads of pubs in a busy residential area. Now I fully appreciate that we need UWE moving forward as a club, but if we're being honest, what it will be is another soulless, identikit, atmosphereless bowl with no local pubs and a very 'modern football' feel to it. And how any Gashead would not look back at the Mem with fond memories after we leave after what happened on 7th May I'll never know! But UWE is the future, so I'm going to enjoy the Mem while we still have it.

Exactly the same for me,I've mentioned it on other threads that i hope they take it into account when building the Uwe,you never know if they get it right ie ..the accoustics the whole of the uwe ground could sound like the blackthorn, that would be awesome. Unfortunately though that part of town is going to be shockingly bad for pre and post match experience compared to the gloucester road. Shame rovers sold of some of the carpark off at the Mem a while back, maybe that would of helped the cause to redevelop the Mem from scratch. I know thats not going to happen though and it's just me being an old sentimental git. You just can't beat a terrace for atmosphere,or the gloucester road for pre and post match experience. If we get promoted at the Uwe i guess we could carry Wael down the dual carriageway and take him to McDonald's.

Believe me any ground will have good memories if we win in it , or you spend your first years supporting your team there. UTG

Btw 6,000 ST's is incredible and massive gratitude must go to Darrell and his team of 100%ers as they are responsible for it, together they have taken us from disaster to elation in two short years and I can't praise them high enough.
Also the takeover, but to Wael in particular who has added to the feel good factor. I think he has done something we've not had in decades - he is a breath of fresh air, comes across as a real genuine footy fan and more importantly in my eyes is someone who the younger generation really identify with. Every ground creates its own atmosphere and memories. I remember thinking Eastville was fantastic for atmosphere and when it had 20000 plus or even 12,000 in it it was a fantastic noise and often when playing football in Fishponds or on the Netham you could hear the roar of the crowd. However when you look at pictures of Eastville after the fire it was a bigger dump than the Memorial and when you see the distance of the goalmouths from both the Muller Road End and the Tote End then you see the very thing we used to moan at when we played at both Rotherham and Brightons temporary grounds - far too far from the action. It is sometimes difficult to remember that the final game at Eastville ,an event in itself which you would think would bring out the crowd was watched by I believe just over 3400 in League 1 as it is now compared to the 11000 at the Mem last game. Twerton was a bigger dump than the Mem but the atmosphere was fantastic and very intimidating. At the end of the day whilst a ground can be acoustic friendly it is down to the people in there. So lets not write the UWE off because I am sure that if it happens (I still say If)it will soon be just like all the other grounds but with the huge advantage of having more seating and comfort to make it a better experience for the needs of more fans and if the acoustics are better then I am sure we are more than capable of matching and beating that fantastic atmosphere against Dagenham and then we will have I Imagine some fantastic bars in the new ground which with the professionalism of our new owners can be a real breadwinner ad make it feel like home.

I first watched the Gas at Twerton, but obviously the majority of my years are from watching them at the Mem and I will miss it when we eventually move, just like I still miss Twerton. You're bound to always miss the good times you spent in a place.
As others have said though, UWE (if we move there) will provide us with fond memories as well, and if enough Gasheads are in there week in week out it'll be a great atmosphere.
Question, hypothetical at this stage, but if we were in the UWE on a bog standard mid table match in League 1, or hopefully the Championship, how many do we think we'd get, on average?
I was also wondering how we would manage to create a good atmosphere if the ground was half full? Would it be best to try and have all the fans sat together by selling in blocks, or spread the fans out?

If 6,000 is true, that is fantastic and means the Mem will be rocking all season.

If 6,000 is true, that is fantastic and means the Mem will be rocking all season. with 6000 sold leaving only around 4000, many will buy early bird as a result of limited numbers, meaning many of our games may no longer be pay on the day....
infact, given that last season the online sales went pretty well I can see a bit of a shake-up with how it's all going to work....

Great news about the number of ST sales. That really does look like a step change in sales compared to anything I can remember. A successful team helps of course but we've been promoted before and not seen this so I think there must be a little more to it than that. I really hope we can push on in terms of a new stadium and also on the pitch to capitalise upon the momentum. It really is starting to feel like it might be our turn at last after so many years of waiting.

I think the 6000 mentioned is a very optimistic 'guess'.
The club released a statement a couple of weeks ago, stating 4300 ish, including seats. They will no doubt issue another one soon, but with the rate they've apparently been selling, I would doubt the figure is much more than 4700 or thereabouts.
Happy to be proved wrong though.

I suppose that depends on what proportion of seated season ticket holders, had already renewed by then. If a large proportion leave it to the last week before they go on general release, then a substantial increase is perfectly possible. We shall just have to wait for the next update.

The author of the article that states that 6,000 STs have been sold has a long history of being right about things before official confirmation comes from the club. In any case, the supporters club website reported that 3,871 terrace season tickets had been sold by 4pm on 30 July. If you add on the East and West Stands, which are bound to sell out you're already at over 5,000. If you add tickets sold since the SC article and the South Stand, then 6,000 sounds about right. www.bristolrovers.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=448566
