It was a shame we didn't take the World Cup seriously in the 30s and 50s, we may have won a couple before 1966 and would have taken some of the underachievement jibes off our backs. Also, the press need to take some responsibility, building players up before the inevitable fall. For me, I do think it may be time to pick players from the Championship rather than the Premiership, if only to reinstall some pride and lose some of that baggage. One thing I have realised in recent years though, and many have said the same thing, the national team no longer hold the same passion for me as it once did. Not sure why though. There is no connection between the players and the fans in my opinion , most of the players are picked not for their overall skill and commitment but for the team they play for. Agree with your comment about picking players from the lower leagues as well, if you have players playing well surely they should have a chance ? Just for an example here why not give noble from West Ham a chance he had a cracking season just gone and what about Defoe ? He maybe 33 but he still scored goals for fun at a team struggling at the bottom of the table. The lack of connection is a good point. I remember a Radio Bristol commentator talking about our promotion last season, he pointed out that a shirtless Matty Taylor was still talking with fans on the terrace an hour after the game finished. What premiership footballer would have been able to do that? Not only from a personal view, but from a club and sponsorship one.

Very true i remember Matty Taylor , Ollie mcburnie and James Clarke standing on the middle of the pitch chatting to fans and press long after the celebrations took place, top , top boys. Will never forget that day !!!!

I obviously want our club to be as successful as possible but we would almost certainly lose that connection or at least a lot of it if we were promoted to the Premier league one day.

Here is an example. Lucas Poldolski has played for Germany many many times. His wife does not sit up in the VIP area in the stands. She stands/sits with the 'normal' fans. She usually has a small German flag painted on each check. She will wear the German shirt. After each game he plays in, he goes across to her, and also chats to the fans in the immediate area. The German fans love him. He is not the only German player that does this.

I switched the tele on for the England game, saw Rooney was playing, and then switched it off.

Too true. I used to watch all the England home games but when they made Rooney captain I vowed never to watch another one while he was still captain. Now I don't want to watch them while he's even in the squad. I'm well educated but I still don't possess the necessary vocabulary to adequately convey how much I dislike the ugly, fat, granny-shagging w*nker.

Most on here, including me, agree with you. And from a quick random browse round other forums from the Prem to League 2, it would seem it's a common view. But still 85,000-odd turned up at Wembley to watch them, as they always do. Who are these people, why do they fork out so much money and why do they do it? times have changed for sure.... for the 1966 world cup final tickets were available on the day of the match....

I do it because I watch them away, I'm going to Slovenia today. It gives me the caps I need for bigger games. If I went purely for Footbal reasons I wouldn't bother. But you meet up with some great people, have a drink, and see a different country. Not all bad

They can always fit a kitchen, and better than the chaps from Leeds. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

John Stones is going to be some player for England. Looked a class above every other outfield England player to me.
Also has anyone noticed Kyle Walker's inability to cross a ball?

Everyone bangs on about Rooney, but how the hell does Cahill and Walker keep their place in the team?! Dreadful players that keep getting picked!

Walker has pace but can't cross a ball to save a life and defending is hit and miss. Smalling is better than Cahill IMO.

I agree what's being said about Rooney, he needs to play 10 or up top, Alli seems to pick and choose when he plays well, mainly when his mate Kane is playing!
I think if Kane isn't playing Rooney should be 10, although saying that, I think we missed Lallana the last two games!
Walker is poor, we must have better full backs out there! Can't Rose play RB and get Gibbs back, or play Bertrand?
