A relatively small league 1 standard squad, an intense playing period aligned to that a squad which itself has been decimated by injury, has led us to this position. It’s interesting that Ed Upson said to Geoff Twentyman on “Having a Gas” this week that having a settled side under GC meant that the players knew where to find each other on the pitch (allegedly), as many on here had called for. However we seem to be experiencing the worst injury crisis for several seasons, presumably through fatigue as these days I don’t believe it is attributable to the state of the pitch. Under DC’s squad rotation ethos the treatment table seemed to be a lot less busy but there was more irritation (particularly on here) that the breakdown in play was due to the lack of familiarity. It seems that getting the balance right between an ever present first team and a squad is trickier than it looks and that’s without the psychological issues of trying to keep everyone happy and motivated (stevek192 and many others included).😂

It’s somewhat risible that Walsall fans have changed their tune after DC has strung together a few wins and I imagine that the same will happen on here, fingers crossed. I do think that BG has changed too much too soon (I.e. he shouldn’t have changed the attack and defence formations at the same time) and will come to realise that he has made a mistake in a month or two but is currently too full of self belief to see it.

Ironically the West stand of a stadium is usually designed to be the largest as it is seen as being the best view for predominantly afternoon fixtures. This means that more spectators are looking away from the sun with the typical uk pitch orientation of 15 degrees west of north.

There are a couple of parameters that come into play when assessing the design of a new stand. Firstly the right to light of adjacent properties which is influenced by the shape and size of the development. That would be immaterial if kept within the existing envelope, as mentioned previously, however a larger building is possible if compensation can be negotiated with the neighbours. The second is the geometry of the raked seating area which has to fit within defined limits of row depth and height (although it’s a bit more complicated than that when you get into the details of sight lines and “C” values) which means that there is a maximum geometric size. This is probably the limiting factor for the current west stand as the external access and boundary distance define where the back of the stand can be and therefore the number of rows of seats and consequently its height. In an ideal world the back of the stand would be 90m from the centre circle (maximum viewing distance) but in this instance is probably a lot less.

FWIW I think this could turn out to be an even better appointment than DC at this stage in BRFC’s development because our last few managers have not had recent experience at Championship level or above, if at all. GC had been in or around League 1 for a decade so knew what would work, and DC at levels below, but if we truly want to get into the Championship and stay there then we need someone who knows what it’s about. In all walks of life and business you appoint professionals with qualifications appropriate to the task in hand. And yes I know BG doesn’t have managerial experience but he ticks all the other boxes and in theory should be better connected to the calibre of players we need, even if they are surplus to requirements at their parent clubs.

My worry with Ben Garner is that he strikes me as a coach - not a manager; which ultimately is all he had ever been until now. I don't mean any malice by it, and I will get behind him 100%. But he's not charismatic (IMO) and I can't imagine him ever putting a firework up someone's arse (fact is it will be required from time to time) and the football he wants to play will be difficult at this level without having a pretty substantial budget you'd imagine (i.e. highly technical players at this level won't be easy to come by and will likely cost a pretty penny as a result) - and you'd very much doubt he's likely to be given the budget to do that. Certain managers (and indeed players) fit better at certain clubs. And I just worry Garner would be better suited to a Peterborough or a Sunderland, Pompey etc - dare I say it, even a Mansfield! (given their supposed resources). Obviously I'm not writing him off - and I really hope he proves me wrong. But those are my concerns nonetheless. GC always gave me the impression that he wouldn’t take any prisoners/punch your lights out if you got on the wrong side of him, which commanded respect, whereas BG looks like he might just be “extremely disappointed” and whip out a fines spreadsheet.

So, someone resigns. Could be he is retiring. Could be he is dying. Could be he is moving to another country. Could be he is fed up paying out money on a football club. Could be he wants to spend more time with his missus. Could be a number of reasons. Who cares? He could be retiring to the Mansfield area which is a highly sought after and under appreciated part of the country.

Every player is a gamble; non-league that can’t step up, higher league on the way down, too young and lacking experience, old and wise but slowing down, coming back from long term injury, overseas but homesick, etc, etc. Even if you are spending millions you can’t predict the future however if you haven’t got the cash (like us) you can lower the risk by managers working with players they know and developing the youth team which is exactly what we are doing. That’s why, in my opinion, the scouting at BRFC is crucial to our ability to stay in this league and hopefully progress.

He chose qpr over us as who he was rooting for ( quest ) never mind Utg ...but he did qualify his decision by saying that the QPR team was still largely his players with whom he had more of a connection at that point in time. It’s not a situation that any of us would ever be in as we are a one team for life bunch of misfits. UTG
