Mayors do not have planning powers, so while his support would be nice, it's not his decision. It remains the fact, that the number of planning applications by Rovers, turned down by the council, is exactly zero. Incidently, Ferguson thought the Metrobus scheme pointless as well - it was the Lib Dem council that introduced it before he became Mayor. Ultimately yes, but with the mayor on our side it'll help push the council for planning, the fact that he's a Labour mayor and the Mem a Labour area may also make a difference whilst driving up support for a new stadium. I've got a feeling he has some background is in sport or sport management ( i think he studied it in the USA ) but i could be completely wrong ! When he first stood for mayor against red trousers brother had a long talk about Rovers stadium woes which he was campaigning

There's absolutely no point in trying to talk to the residents. Most of them will be pretty ambivalent I suspect. This will be hijacked by the usual suspects, the loony left brigade in the form of Carstairs, the Radice bitch, that awful stuttering woman from the Sainburys JR, and every other left-wing lunatic , and there are hundreds of them lurking under stones all around Bristol, will unite and attempt to shout this down. It really doesn't bear thinking about. I hope Wael knows what he's letting himself in for. No doubt, we have to expect opposition and a long drawn out process. But, the heartening thing is that the Green triumvirate of Radice, Hoyt and Telford are no longer on the council and have less influence. Also that Carstairs arguments used against the Sainsbury's development actually support the development of the Mem. These arguments were adopted by TRASH and the broader congregation of the Bishopston Society, including the "Asset of Community Value" flag attached by the Council. There'll be NIMBY's that will never be pleased, but it is also in the club's interest to try to engage with the local community in developing the plans. We might well see Stephen Barrett surface again who was a key exponent of both TRASH and ROSE. Perhaps Wael might "engage" with him for starters.

Surely TRASH should have no worries now that we're looking at turning The Mem in a 21st Century Sport Stadium?

I haven't read the whole thread as I am bored to death of this subject so this has probably already been said but I think we will be in the same undeveloped ground talking about the same sh** in 10 years time, I cant ever see anything happening accept maybe a new carpet and curtains. If anything does happen I'll eat my hat

I m hopeful that the word refurbishment is been used in the first instance as it seems more friendly to local than rebuild.
I would disappointed to be honest if we just replace the tent for example afterwe came so close to moving to new ground entirely.
My vision even if it counts for nothing would be to rebuild the ground stand by stand, have the biggest of the stands where the car park is now as it is not as close to the neighbours walls. With today's architect and technologies I believe something quite impressive could be thought up. 20k seater possibly.

Starting to wonder if we were ever really close, I doubt Sainsbury's ever really intended handing over £30m to NH, and you have to wonder if the ALQ's ever really wanted to do a deal with the UWE, or they ever wanted to do a deal with them, as I can't believe we'd sooner now redevelop the Mem when we'd found a perfect site at the UWE.

Maybe the deal we wanted would have led to UWE having to pay HP due to non student related income? Physically the site was great but maybe there were so many interested parties muddying the waters that a breakdown in the deal was inevitable once both sides had parity.

HP were looking for a site to base their manufacturing sales and service activities in the 1980s.I believe it was between the UK and Mexico .Margaret Thatcher placed a compulsory purchase order on the land(Walls Court Road farm) owned by my neighbour To this day she complains they were given a derisory amount of compensation with no spin offs if the land was later sold on for building and this is exactly what happened with HP making millions a few years later

It appears to me that the deal was on the table ready to sign and was no worse in content than the deal Higgs & Co would have been happy to proceed with (had Sainsburys not reneged). The ‘breakdown’ being due to the unfeasible (freehold etc.) demands of the Al-Qadis. People can decide whether they support the Al-Qadis in their decision or not. What is not in doubt is that 6 years has been wasted on the UWE project and we’re now back to the position we were in 2000, except with very limited options due to the specific requirements of the current owners.

I bet they're mostly the same membership, though. TRASH will complain that the development is too big or that it loses its historical significance and will be sure to object. Basically anything we do will be met with resistance and generalisation of the average football supporter by the NIMBYs.
