Some thoughts on this deal:
It's been clear for a long time that he was leaving. This will rile some but I don't think the club were as keen to hang onto Jonson as many in our fanbase were. The latter is not a reflection on his talent, because he was by far the best player at the club, but keeping him would have smashed the wage budget and, without having a dig at the club, I genuinely don't think their short-term ambitions mirror Jonson's. There's also a reasonable argument that Jonson has been underpaid for a while (not helped by the Bennett situation) and stuff like that festers.
The fee is decent, but no more than that. The club had maneuvered themselves into a situation whereby they had lost a lot of leverage. Ultimately, he could easily have left for 750k, maybe even 500k, had this dragged on any longer and the likes of Peterborough and other interested clubs secured alternative targets. If it's really 1.25m (and I'd be concerned if that figure included add-ons) then, all things considered, it's not bad. With 2 years or more on his contract though, I think we'd be looking at a minimum of 2m.

Posh paid 1 million for Mohamed Eisa who was only proven in L2 (one season). We sell them a top L1 goalscorer (and one who has scored in the Championship) for 'apparently' just over a million. Meaning City got almost as much for a guy who hardly played for them than we did for our best player. Both same age. If anyone pants were pulled down it was ours - Should have held out for more imo I think there is two things you’re not factoring into it though. Firstly contractual length, this means a great deal for the value of a player. JCH only had 1 year left on his deal, meaning we were under more pressure to sell and the buying club wouldn’t want to pay huge amounts for a player available for free next summer. Eisa was on a longer contract with City. Secondly JCH had told the club he wanted to leave at the start of the week and wasn’t going to sign a new deal. That further weakened our hand as we didn’t want to risk making him unhappy by rejecting bids, discontent in the dressing room is not something you particularly want when you’re just about to start a new season. In an ideal world, JCH would’ve signed a new deal, banged in 20 this season and gone to the championship next year for a lot more. However this hasn’t happened and under the circumstances I think we’ve got a fairly tidy fee for him which can be reinvested and we’ll be better for in the long run. This guy gets it 👏

Only on Gaschat can a player score a sh** load as the league one 4th highest goalscorer for the season and get sold for 1m be a good thing. McNulty - another who went for a similar fee having only scored in L2. Some peeps still think 1million is a lot these days, it isnt Think that is part of the problem, maybe we so used to receiving next to nothing we are blown away by 1 million. Not good amount for a star player. Massively under his value im afraid.

As opposed to letting him running down his contract and leaving for nothing. I'd rather have had his goals for the season and lose him for nothing. You can never underestimate the value of a consistent goalscorer, Rovers fans should know that better than anyone. Who knows, he may have got us promoted and decided to sign a deal? That’s a fair point lmw. I’ve said I think it’s a good deal and you avoid a Tom L situation of a player running his contract down but if you can accept that he will go for nothing but perhaps, and it’s only perhaps, he scores 16 -20 goals that his replacement won’t then I can see the different argument. I’m just not sure JCH was that sort of player who would have done that. Blimey, he moaned enough when he was here happily, what he’d have been like if we’d stopped him getting a move to Posh or anyone who knows. Still plenty of time for his replacement to be signed. UTG!

Negativity breeds negativity' best he went and for 1.25 million I'll have some of that. Just hope we sign a half decent striker with some of that money now
