Most of us would agree that this transfer window has been one of the most productive and exciting we've ever had, and most of the players signed so far seem to be coming here because they buy into the vision of Ben Garner and/or the coaching setup.
A lot of people are saying all we need now is a proven goalscorer (or 2) to really compete this season, and I completely agree, we need goals in this team. The problem I've got with this view, is that we never seem to sign proven goalscorers, in fact, when was the last time we did sign one?
If anyone can give me some names of players we've signed who fit this bill, I'd be interested to hear them?
The most we'll be able to afford is another JCH, ie a player who Widdrington can see has goals in them, but had never been given the chance to prove it.

I'll take that, but he was a goalscorer, but hardly prolific.

Bruce Bannister? Alan Warboys? Chick Bates I believe was a striker and bought. A long time ago though.

I would have Jermaine Easter, Junior Agogo, Jo Kuffour, Rickie Lambert all down as proven goalscorers before they joined the club. I am sure there are others.
We've got the money from the JCH sale so we should be able to get at least someone with a decent track record of scoring goals before imo.

We're not going to sign a player who has consistently scored 20+ goals in L1. That type of player will already be linked with Championship clubs.
There are very few clubs in L1 that could sign such a striker.
However, we do want to sign someone who has played at this level, had a certain amount of success and has the potential to do even better. Someone like JCH when we signed him from Coventry. There aren't too many to choose from but I think this could be a breakthrough season for Stephen Humphrys so he'd be my choice.

Paul Randall - 2nd time. Steve White - 2nd time. Andy Rammell Andy Rammell came as a proven goalscorer, and thanks to him and his we avoided relegation that season

Well Rickie Lambert had scored 28 goals from 64 games for Rochdale and Barry Hayles had scored 73 goals from over 150 games for Stevenage.

John Taylor Scott McGleish Derek Riordan Jamie White Even Payne and Zebroski had good seasons immediately before we signed them.
Apologies to Taylor for being grouped with the others on this list. Needless to say it doesn’t always work out.

16 in 23 for Peterborough, 7 in 6 for Stevenage all before he came to us...we’d kill for those numbers now. In fact he’s without a club right now- sign him up!

Which all goes to show there is no guarantee with any transfer. Some work out, others don’t. Just have to hope that TW and his team do their homework about the player. All players have to be dealt with individually whether they have scored lots of goals or not or have potential to do well. If it were easy to get those players football would be far easier, but it’s not. UTG!
