Just back and haven’t read the whole thread but for what it’s worth: We didn’t play well throughout but at times we did pass it around and made them look poor. A better team than AFCW would have been a few goals up at HT and won easily. Upson played as well as I’ve seen him and deserved the MOM closely followed by Craig or even Tom N. Nichols played well and despite being short kept on being fed high balls. Why? When it was on the ground he is good on the ball and he never gave up and kept their defence busy. And I’ve no idea what Payne did when he came on for Nichols, we were better off with Nichols on, at least he jumped for the ball, hassled their defence and never gave up. Payne never started. We are short of quality but we dug in and got a result, the players are giving their best for the team (and D.C.) so no complaints there. With a better No.9 up front we would be a far better team. We’ve too many players like Matthews and Bennett who are good on the ball but have little end product because when they look to put a cross in or pass into the box there’s no one there, so they cut back and play back to a colleague. For all the stick he gets on here Craig is playing very well and shows great commitment and didn’t lose too many headers against their giants. And when he went off with a cut, from where I was sat in the front row of the East Stand it looked bad, he was soon back on. That’s the kind of commitment we need at the moment. We weren’t very good but AFCW were poor and despite their size, it wasn’t matched by effort or skill. We’ll finish above them. Well done DC and well done the team, the 3 points are more important than the performance and it will give the team a lot of confidence I hope. Big test on Saturday against Barnsley. I guess that’s one match we’d be happy to have a 0-0 against! UTG! Thank you! On this forum it's so refreshing to get level headed reports that aren't loaded with emotion driven hyperbole.

I'm very grateful for the work that DC has done in stabilizing the team since relagation. The trauma he suffered as a result of that relagation must have spurred him on massively. I do believe though that, had a more experienced coach been brought in at that time we wouldn't have dropped out of the league. Someone like Russel Osman I believe would have got us over the line in those eight games. As for showing loyality, whilst he's a nice bloke, he is getting paid a salary he could only dream about outside of football. That is on a five year contract. Our recent success has been a case of just in time performances. We blew it at Dover and got a lucky win at Wembley. We barely beat a Dagenham and Redbridge side that was already relagated. Maybe it's a generational thing but I suppose I expect more from my club. In 1974 I couldn't even imagine us getting relagated to the 4th Div let alone the Non-League. Make no mistake our form is currently dire and if left unchecked we will be back in the 4th Division. If we did have anyone at the helm of the club I think they would be acting pretty damn soon over our predicament. I think DC is lucky that the ships captain went overboard many months ago. I think the idea a more experienced coach would have kept us up misses the point. John Ward was an experienced coach and he set up the fall. I actually think even if a more experienced coach had kept us up it would only have postponed the inevitable another season or two as we continued with the same pattern of previous years. The fact was, and this has been confirmed by former players since, there were deep culture of unprofessionalism within the club that needed a total revolution. D.C saw that, called it out and started the process of rebuilding from the bottom. I will be forever grateful to him for restoring my belief in the playing staff. Even now, when performances are poor you can't compare to the total lack of commitment or direction in performances had under Mcghee, Ward and Buckle etc (only short memories do this - I remember never counting two or more passes over 90 mins). A new "experienced" manager and I would fear a return to those dark days. I think this is why the poll is at near 90%.

You've forgotten the third and best option...back him in January to turn it around. How much time does he want to turn it around and why are we in this situation to start with Easy - because we were promoted twice.

So far the only non-sarcastic ideas are Steve Cotterell and Neil Warnock (if he's sacked). Which sounds to mr like there are no ideas.

Was the pitch always that short or have they shortened it to accommodate the sight lines from the Centenary?

I'd give the crowd a 7. 8 if we had managed to push it under 1000.

I think this team does need time to gel. I know people saying "why can't we be like Peterborough?" but they may have just got lucky - or be playing a style which is easy to adapt to quickly. In the conference people wanted us to be more like Barnet (Physical- direct), in the second more like Northampton (Physical - direct), and last season like Shrewsbury (physical -direct). All those sides declined.
Well I think we may just come out of this bad patch better than before - and with a style of play that is more than just a short term fix.

No historical comparison at all. The culture amongst playing staff - whatever results on the pitch - has been transformed by DC. Arguably, the trouble began with Trolls. Pretty weak argument that would be. Of course there is a historical comparison. Both managers hit the top half of League One and things deteriorated once they were forced to sell their prime asset(s) and rebuild. The one thing DC has done is to retain the core of the dressing room and evolve the squad slower, whereas PT made the mistake of letting experience depart. Like DC, he still did a terrific job however and some great memories came from his tenure. Time will tell whether DC is able to turn things around whilst preserving the culture. I for one fully support him and value the continuity he offers us. Agree things looked good with the Laurence/ Trollope pairing but some underlying issues at the club weren't addressed. No idea what was going on behind the scenes or from where it started, but the lack of professionalism became evident under Penny and didn't change until DC. My hope is that when DC eventually goes he leaves this legacy as I had lost all faith in the playing staff before he came in. As you say time will tell.

Not sure how you gain 2 promotions due to luck? That is a total of 95 matches that we were lucky in? Watch the Grimsby game again. Lucky to have 11 players in the pitch with puddy doing what he did and also played badly, very badly The Daggers match, as ecstatic as I was, was a huge slice of luck. We had lost to Accrington twice and they did everything but score that day and we did so in extra time while still awaiting their result. We went up in 3rd place. If that’s not the rub of the green then I don’t know what is. Fact is we’ve had a core of non league players overachieve and done well to get us where we are. We cannot expect that to continue, not as I see it anyway. Remind me how our first 10non League results went. 95 matches lucky? No but did well to get an players in gaffers at the right time and Ellis Harrison probably scoring his most important and influential goal in the quarters. Even Balanta played his part. We lost one player to Grimsby who I thought was better and more important to us and I thought Trotman played a decent part. It was luck & chemistry plus a determined manager who gave his all. To say we hammered promotion woukd be both a lie and disengenuous. We were able to be lucky in the final because we were in the final. We were able to be lucky on the last day of the season because we were in the mix. Watch England again in 66. Watch Man U again in 1999. Football involves luck. We were unlucky to go down to the Conference - but then again we fully deserved it just as we did those two promotions.

Why don't you two go and watch your football in South Bristol? Sorry. We are only telling the truth. What happened to that Bamber guy that used to go on about the "truth" when we were in the Conference? I think it was that Matty Taylor wasn't good enough for the conference and DC was out of his depth. Oh and we drew too any games as well.

They made their stance when they voted against the format. Maybe they wouldn't feel comfortable manipulating fans' freedom of choice by using outlandish entrance fees/closed doors, thus denying them the opportunity to watch their team? Isn't that what the people who protest on this forum want, to manipulate fans to their way of thinking, by calling them scabs, accusing them of endangering the clubs very survival etc etc What I am trying to allude to is if a protest is to be successful, then a protest by the actions of the club would be much more affective than fans boycotting the game. There was no press reports that I have seen, that reported on the low crowd but if the club played behund closed doors then that would get national attention. There have been a few uses of scab but most posts are making passionate, persuasive arguments because they consider this a serious issues with major consequences. Why take argument as manipulation? People talk of democracy - a boycott is a form of democracy and could alter the future of this competition. Just like political parties campaign to change minds and get votes - fans are campaigning for something they care about. Find it odd that this is taken as some form of fascist bullying.

If you read "Inverting the Pyramid" England's obsession with wingers after the war (partly due to having a lot of very good ones at the time) led to us being left behind tactically. Somehow the idea that this is a specific and necessary role still lingers even today.

I see so much talk of 'wingers' and 'target men' on this forum. If we are genuinely interested in evolving football at Rovers we need to move beyond antiquated systems that have been long abandoned beyond the lower tiers of British football. What would you call Costa, Lukaku, Kane, Carrol, and the other big centre fowards in top flight football. Plus im pretty sure Ronaldo, Robben etc are wingers. It was said wing backs were antiquated a while ago, yet they're still used, 442 was antiquated. It's 11 v 11 and always has been, but a team that's successful will get the system they use copied, like Spain and yet the Dutch stuffed them playing 442 and pressing the ball not long ago. I'd call them big strong centre forwards but they don't operate as target men in the old sense. Dito Ronaldo and Robben much more than just winders beating a man and getting crosses in. Agree wing backs have made a resurgence and game constantly evolving. It's more the 'hitting the big man and feeding off the knock downs' that is long gone.

Simple facts to this thread, when he signed he said he liked to play off the big man and be off his shoulder, in essence the last man. He would not have scored this goal in the majority of his games this season as he hasn’t really played as as the last man. He has played the majority on the wing or in the hole coming short for the ball. We also don’t play wingers and how often do we see crosses like this? I think some on here need to get there head out of the clouds and judge him in inside the 18 yard box. Surely if he never moves beyond 'playing off the big man' he will never play at a higher level than this. There is a chance DC is improving his all round game. Optimistic I know but let's see.

I think you could be right Paul but unfortunately I think we will not find out- reason because DC is not capable of finding either a targetman, two wingers or a defensive midfielder of quality in January. I see so much talk of 'wingers' and 'target men' on this forum. If we are genuinely interested in evolving football at Rovers we need to move beyond antiquated systems that have been long abandoned beyond the lower tiers of British football.

That's not the same token. And by the same token, you're wrong. Just meant you're not addressing the point. Moaning on forums didn't alter anything at Liverpool.

And your way is to moan on a forum. Doesn't really make you Rosa Parks does it? But by the same token, it doesn't make me a gullible mug happy to plod along with blind faith That's not the same token.
