Welcome Ben. Thank goodness you didn't choose a fat bird standing on a ball as your badge. Good to see you have standards. Of course, you'll now have to learn the words to 'Goodnight Irene', shout "Arghhhhhh....!" every time the opposing team's GK takes a goal kick, drinks lots of pre- match cider and eat at least one pastie at half time. Oh, and from this day forth, you must promise to never, ever, use the term 'soccer'. It's football - we know 'cos we invented it. Same as we invented Baseball but called it Rounders, and it's played by schoolgirls .

Why eat pies when there are pasties? Because they repeat because they repeat because they repeat on you for hours, disgusting. Just because they happen to repeat on you, doesn't mean they are disgusting. Cucumber repeats on me but it wouldn't dimiss it as disgusting. At least with a pasty you can see what you are eating, unlike the brown sludge in pies which could well be badger for all I know.

£152k could not have been sitting in a Tesco bag waiting to be nicked, it would have been in a bank account. The BRSC statement states "misappropriation of funds" not 'theft', suggesting it is missing from the bank account. The BRSC 'Club Rules and Constitution' lays down that four members of the Executive Committee:
BRSC Chairperson BRSC elected BRFC Director BRSC Treasurer BRSC Secretary
are "officers for signatory purposes (see rule 7)". Rule 7 states "All cheques will be signed by TWO BRSC officers". Therefore, unless forgery has taken place, two people had to authorise removal from the bank account.
It is interesting that the BRSC statement uses the term "probable misappropriation", not "possible":
Probable - likely to have occurred or prove true. Possible - something that could happen or prove true.

'The Colony' reflects that it is on the site of Colony Farm, which probably took it's name from the now long gone 'Hortham Idiot Colony' which was nearby.

"lower league clubs don't need or want charity"
I was involved with a tier ten club in the 90s. A nearby tier two club regularly passed on training equipment, balls, office equipment and bar/catering equipment to us and other small clubs. They also loaned us items for short term needs. I don't recall any recipient club being ungrateful.

Totally against Premiership clubs owning any part of another club. But, I think there is scope for 'senior' clubs to take a local, lower division club under their wing. Maybe helping out with medical staff, use of training facilities, advice from ground staff, marketing support, loan of equipment etc. Rovers could adopt Forest Green or Mangotsfield, Liverpool - Tranmere, Brighton - Whitehawk etc.

My apologies if this has been raised before. As a newbie to the forum, I am acutely aware that posting a comment that is critical of established members will be seen by some as pretentious or downright rude. It is not my intention to upset anyone, but sometimes a new viewpoint can prove useful.
My comment concerns the overuse and frankly ridiculous use of the quote facility. I've been trying to read historical threads to get a feel for the forum and to avoid asking unnecessary questions. However, the overuse of quotes has been driving me nuts, and makes reading some threads a laborious trial. There are many 10 page threads that could be 2 pages without all the quotes. Some selective quotes are necessary and help with the flow and clarity of a thread but the overall majority are superfluous.
A prime example is the excellent assessment of the Crawley game by syevek192 'At least we get another chance but should have won'. His long post is interesting and informative, but did the first two responders really need to quote his entire post simply to make a one line comment?
Unnecessary quotes should be removed by mods/admin. I am a member of another, non-football related forum which suffered from the same problem. Following action by mods, members soon got the hang of it and the forum improved 100%.
Hopefully, this post will be accepted in the spirit that is intended and not seen as a newbie whinge. You can quote me on that.
Best wishes, Terry

The trains are running but on a reduced service. There is a revised timetable for Saturday on the Southern Rail website - www.southernrailway.com/your-journey/strike/what-services-are-running-sat/There are two stations at Crawley - Crawley and Three Bridges. Both are a long walk from the ground, Three Bridges being the furthest away. Most trains heading south from London Victoria stop at Three Bridges, but only those going to Chichester stop at Crawley station. Therefore you will have more choice going to Three Bridges, but a very long walk (Google Maps says it is a 2.2 mile, 46 minute walk). Three Bridges is on the Victoria - Gatwick - Brighton line. If necessary, Southern will shut down other lines to keep the Brighton line open. I'll be passing Three Bridges at around 10am. If I see any blue & white shirts I'll offer a lift. Using the link above, there are revised timetable PDFs at the bottom.

In ten minutes on the internet I found versions of Goodnight Irene by:
Eric Clapton Leadbelly Jim Reeves The Weavers Tom Waites Johnny Cash Pete Seeger Nat King Cole Van Morrison with Jerry Lee Lewis Little Richard Doctor John Jack White Kelly Joe Phelps Frank Sinatra The Sensational Alex Harvey Band Ronnie Lane Gene Autry Keith Richards Grateful Dead Brian Ferry The Pogues James Taylor Box Car Willie Jimmy Buffet Tom Jones
plus many more.
How about a different version before every home game?

In the days of the Tote End, everyone knew three or four verses of Irene, now we only seem to get the chorus.

It was something I noticed at the playoff final; the Grimsby fans had a much greater variety of songs/chants than us. You can only sing Irene and Come on You Blues so many times in a game.

Southern rail are running reduced services on Saturday due to RMT strike. There is a revised timetable on the Southern website. Also, if coming to Crawley from the south, be aware that due to Lewes Bonfire Night after 12 noon: No trains will be stopping at any stations between Berwick and Brighton. No replacement buses will be stopping between Newhaven and Brighton. Nothing at all will be stopping at Lewes. Christ are you sure there isnt a wickerman festival It can be bigger! Wickerman is capped at 70,000. They've had 85,000 at Lewes in the past. Last year, it was a wet Thursday night and they had around 25,000. This year it will be a dry Saturday night. I'm guessing 35-40,000. They used to run special trains from London but now actively discourage outsiders.

Whilst I am only about an hour away and believe we should always try and support our club, I won't be going. If I wanted to spend a Tuesday night with six blokes and dog I'd go and watch my local Wealden FC who play in a field.

Post-match avoid Lewes and the A27 at all costs. Road closures run from approximately 2pm to midnight.
Fireworks - Do not for one nanosecond, think about taking any fireworks to the match. Sussex Police are very experienced in dealing with bonfire night. To quote their website applying county wide "the throwing of fireworks will not be tolerated and will be dealt with robustly". You can expect the magistrate to crucify you.

Parking:
Travelling south on M23, leave at Junc 11 and take 4th exit off roundabout signed A23 Crawley. ¾ of the way down the dual carriageway, look for parking signs and stewards in hi-viz on left. Turn into Broadfield Business Park where there is free parking. Park up and follow others down small footpath between allotments and another business park. You will emerge outside the stadium opposite the Redz Bar.
If full, continue to the roundabout at the bottom of the hill, go round roundabout and back up the other side of the dual carriageway. Half way up the hill there will be parking signs and stewards at Tilgate Business Park where similar parking arrangements are in place.
Drinking:
This is an edge of town stadium so there aren't many pubs. There are a couple about ten minutes walk away but they are hardly worth the effort, and I don't know when they open.
The Redz Bar at the back of the South Terrace will be open from 10.30am. Small but friendly and welcomes home and away fans. Last time we played there they laid on extra cider choices.
Away fans entrance:
Walk clockwise around the outside of the stadium until you find yourself in a corner and can't walk any further. Away turnstiles are then obvious.
Hats/sunglasses:
The away terrace faces virtually due south. At midday, if sunny, the low sun at this time of year is going be straight into our eyes. A peaked hat or sunglasses may be wise.
