The average age of the 7 first team players signed by Garner - 21 years old. The average age of the 6 first team players released by Garner - 27 years old. Edit: The average age of the 5 players offered or who have signed new deals - 23 years old. This is what I was getting at. Many have said that they feel the squad isn’t a million miles off but some were hammering the current squad for not performing under our manager. I appreciate some will be under contract still, and won’t feature in the released section of the retained list, but surely if the players didn’t suit our managers alleged revolutionary style then we need wholesale change and not bit piece changes here or there. Don’t think we’ll get that from kids alone either. Don’t get me wrong I want to see young, up and coming, promising kids coming through. But I don’t think we should be chucking them in at the deep end. They need decent experienced support to back them up. And I’m a little concerned we’re going after academy cast offs and not looking at those punching above their weight at a lower level. Either way, I’ve made it quite clear how confident I am in the man. Yes. All good teams will have a balance between those players who make you play and those players who stop the other team playing. Same with age, it’s great to have exciting, youngsters with potential but you need experienced plays as well. Hence my comments about Tony Craig. I hope Tom D can provide that experience in defence as we seem to have plenty of midfield experience. UTG!

Perhaps Eric. I think you were half joking (?), but last season, after Christmas our midfield was always under pressure. Actually it’s been under pressure for the past two/three seasons and we rarely seem to control the midfield and that does make the players look very average. Abu or even Upson who often sit in front of the defence get a bit more time but Ollie and other more forward midfielders really struggle for time and are often crowded out, especially against the better teams. Against Coventry in the Cup was a good example. We were just as good for much of the game but their midfield always looked better. (Tbh I can’t remember specifically if OC played in that match) My point is there was rarely an out ball for the midfield and we were always second best in that area. UTG!

I think we are much like many other sides, everyone is looking for that creative, attacking type of midfielder that can unlock doors, keep possession and take someone on. They are hard to find but I do feel sorry for OC when has been used at the tip of what is a very defensive trio with Upson and Abs. He’s almost been set up to fail in that attacking position as, apart from a good shot, he’s not really suited to an advanced position imo. Of that midfield trio I would only ever want a combination of two playing at any one time. I think there were long periods of last season when we were under pressure and players were lacking in confidence - that lack of confidence leads to players hiding and players in possession have no out ball. It made our defence look silly at times too when they have no option to launch it long. Lockyer was often criticised for his distribution when here but look how well he does when he has better players around him looking for a ball to feet.

Why do we need 3 left backs? Unless Leahy leaves I can't see why would so many LB's particularly when club's are apparently looking to cut their playing budgets this summer. Hopefully BG concentrates on signing attacking players as that's where we've struggled for the past 2 or 3 season's. Kelly is still young and I can see him going out on loan like we did with Mayenese. .... I think that there is a strong likelihood we'll be in for Haunstrup and it'll be between him and Leahy for LB / LWB..... I also think we'll see Barrett step up this year. My focus would be signing couple of wingers and forwards

I'm not ITK but there have been links to Haunstrup since the Jan window opened and he fits the young, coachable, player who is available for free and he has League 1 experience albeit limited... (although saying that his place in the 1st team starting line-up was taken by Lee Brown in the 18/19 season as he's played back up to Browner since.....)

The released list is pretty much as expected. We have lost some experience but not a devastating amount.
Disappointed most in Tony Craig's departure but realistically we were only going to get another year from him at most and he'll not be short of offers. Wish him well and enjoyed watching him and his passion in the quarters. Liam Sercombe was one of my favourite players from recent years but he hasn't reached the heights of his first season. So another I wish well at his next club.
Hard to argue that the others have had much impact on the first team during their time here. Plenty of potential that hasn't been fulfilled and so it's fair for them to be released. I've been desperately hoping THD/SM would stay fit and get a lengthy run of games and TN would go on a scoring streak but that obviously hasn't happened. I hope all three find a club (perhaps one division lower is their best bet) and wish them well.
The only contentious point is, as is often the case, Ollie Clarke. He's not had a good year so apart from his tenure (which we all know doesn't carry value in football), he's not in a strong negotiating position. I've no problem with him staying on a fair contract, but I also wouldn't have a problem with him moving on. It's hard to guess at where OC fits into the team next season (obviously dependant on incomings too).

regarding Sam Matthews he will end up back in non league I think there is a good player in him - think it was a bit soon for him when he played under DC and his injuries were unfortunate. You’re probably right he’ll go back to NL but fully expect him back at L1 level at some point

Anyone know if u18 striker Ollie Hulbert is still with us? I know the new apprentices were named in May but new pros - I'm not sure that's been done ?? We know that Phillips and Hoole got early contracts. Hulbert was great when he was younger but perhaps he hasn't progressed like Phillips ??

It's a good point about the midfield, watching all these old England games and the struggle they always had finding someone to play on the left of midfield got me thinking about how such great players at club level were so often wasted for England (Scholes, Lampard, Gerrard etc.). For whatever reason Sercombe and O.Clarke have both seen their performances/consistency dip in the past few seasons and it doesn't help when successive managers have tried playing with 4 central midfielders in the same XI at times.
