I think we are much like many other sides, everyone is looking for that creative, attacking type of midfielder that can unlock doors, keep possession and take someone on. They are hard to find but I do feel sorry for OC when has been used at the tip of what is a very defensive trio with Upson and Abs. He’s almost been set up to fail in that attacking position as, apart from a good shot, he’s not really suited to an advanced position imo. Of that midfield trio I would only ever want a combination of two playing at any one time. I think there were long periods of last season when we were under pressure and players were lacking in confidence - that lack of confidence leads to players hiding and players in possession have no out ball. It made our defence look silly at times too when they have no option to launch it long. Lockyer was often criticised for his distribution when here but look how well he does when he has better players around him looking for a ball to feet. It's a good point about the midfield, watching all these old England games and the struggle they always had finding someone to play on the left of midfield got me thinking about how such great players at club level were so often wasted for England (Scholes, Lampard, Gerrard etc.). For whatever reason Sercombe and O.Clarke have both seen their performances/consistency dip in the past few seasons and it doesn't help when successive managers have tried playing with 4 central midfielders in the same XI at times. Problem is since Lines demise successive managers have had to play 4 CM's, whilst JB will no doubt disagree the only real time we've had any success since we previously got promoted from L2 is when Lines has been on form for us. I'll be annoyed if he now stars for Northampton in the play offs, as perhaps we cast him aside a season or two too soon. Finding a replacement for Lines as to be BG's priority if he hopes to win games by out playing teams next season, rather than relying just on JCH popping up with wonder goals to snatch victories. I can't honestly see Barrett being that player next season, even if he develops into one with time.

Agree Topper, that creative midfielder is a priority though not easy to find. Fingers crossed. UTG!

Agree Topper, that creative midfielder is a priority though not easy to find. Fingers crossed. UTG! Most teams in this league seem to find creative midfield players. In so many games in the last season, we seemed so outnumbered and out thought in midfield. In terms of creativity the current midfield is very pedestrian. However, the current midfield players are battlers and extremely adept at accumulating cards.

Get rid of Ollie and replace with someone creative. I can't face another season of Ogogo, Upson and OC in midfield. Southstandultra very much dislikes this!

Perhaps, but our last three managers haven’t been able to do so after Lines went (or wasn’t good enough in Autumn 18). Im not sure that GC even wanted a creative midfielder, he seemed happy without one, perhaps it was how he wanted it. I’m sure BG does want more midfield creativity so it will be interesting to see what he does. UTG!

Small, nimble striker.. Could be just what we need.. Now have JCH, daly, hulbert, Phillips and another youngster I think... 5 strikers.. Maybe just 1 experienced head to be added up front to partner JCH... Someone with a proven track record at this level who is small, quick, experienced, knows where the back if the net is and has just been released by his club and lives locally... Hmmm....

In fairness under coughlan we had no need or use for a creative midfield player so the players we had were effective in their way within the coughlan set up. We are led to believe that garner wants a pass and move play through midfield style of play which makes it difficult to understand an upson, ogogo, clarke midfield. Liverpool are not especially creative in midfield remember, the full backs create in the main.

You have a point there. Lends itself to a 3-5-2 with Hare and Leahy as wing backs which I think suits both of their games. I think Leahy will come good if played at wingback. Telling that we've got rid of all of our wingers apart from Bennett and Rodman.

Also.. People moaning about no creativity in midfield now.. News flash.. We had one in sercombe who has now been released.. If BG likes to play attractive football then you can only assume he has someone else lined up to take in this role otherwise he'd have offered sercombe something. So, don't panic!!! Those moaning about a lack of creativity in the midfield are probably the same ones who moaned that sercombe gave us nothing after his maiden season.. Careful what you wish for. The reason why he was less effective was because he was dumped out on the wing instead of being in the centre where he could've influenced the game more. Then GC came in and decided on a brawn rather than skill approach. I feel sorry for sercombe. Talented boy but as stated, BG must have someone of that ilk lined up as I can't see him changing his football philosophy to accommodate three hoofers in the middle.

We seem to have only JCH in the double-barrelled surname department. At least we won't run out of "hyphens" on next years replica shirts
