Well that was better!
We rode our luck at times but we did beat one of the top teams in the league. After going one down I feared the worst. We would have gone on to loose by two or three goals this time last week without looking like scoring.
We are now top of our mini seven team league.
If TW can keep this up then surely it makes sense for him to continue until the end of the season. If we play like that most weeks we will stay up no problem.

Ayunga, Harries, Day and Leahy aren’t league one standard in my opinion. None of those would get a job at another league one side if released. Looking at the strength and league one experience of the Pompey squad, I can only see this going one way I’m afraid. Oh dear ...

A quick shout out to Baldwin as he was rather a beast last night playing on what I imagine to be his favoured side as a right footer.
7 Aerials won 12 Clearances 1 Tackle 1 Interception

can we keep it up that has been the problem all season what would paul tisdale have said if he'd have watched this game how can players perform like this tonight and most of the season play like s,,t a new manager when he comes in will face a lot of turmoil he will be probably told the same all crap yes we are going places we are a team in league one and will stay in league one please do go with barton I'm in the Barton camp, we all have pasts but we get on with our futures Perhaps last night proves we don't need to take a massive risk with Barton, we just need to find a manager who's prepared to keep to the basics not over complicate things.

Well done Rovers and well done Widdrington fantastic result. Still begs the question why haven't we been able to produce a performance like this before. Was Tisdale simply not good enough or were the players not playing for him. I hope its the former. Whatever the explanation Widdrington and the team have produced tonight so my beer tastes especially good now. Things have been getting desperate here lately and this gives us a bit of breathing space, but these players need to know that they can't slip back to the level of performance of the last dozen games. UTG What if they don’t like Barton and won’t play for him? We’ve got an excellent A and E, half a mile up the road.

Well, that was a surprise, certainly surprised Pompey. Rovers returned to a Coughlan "they shall not pass" style game and discovered that two big quick strikers will cause problems for any L1 team if the ball can be delivered accurately enough. It did mean that Nicholson was bypassed most of the time, and when he fell deeper to get involved, could get caught in position in vulnerable areas. Should have been replaced with Rodman when Brown came on.

That was much better. What was Tisdale doing so wrong? Player power I think you call it, plus existing staff power. Either way, we needed that and hopefully more of the same v Swindon. If it was then they must have disliked him from the off to get rid after such a short time.

To be fair, aside from against Accy which was truly atrocious, I think the players were putting the effort in, but they were just being guided in the wrong way. Too many changes in formation and personnel from game to game, too much confusion. As much as I love DC, he was guilty of the same thing in the last few months of his reign, and one of the biggest successes of Coughlan in keeping us up when he got the job, was bringing simplicity and consistency to the selections and tactics. I think this is what Widdrington will do if he continues in the role for another couple of games.

Anybody else think that Leahy improved even more last night with the responsibility of the Captains armband ?

Day Baldwin Grant McCormick Ayunga This allowed the wingers in particular Leahy to get the ball in and service the strikers.

Anybody else think that Leahy improved even more last night with the responsibility of the Captains armband ? Yes definitely, he played really well. We all agree that McCormick, Jonah and Day were excellent but I have to say that the whole back line and Grant all played very well too.

Anybody else think that Leahy improved even more last night with the responsibility of the Captains armband ? Still think he gets caught out of position way too often. I know he needs to get forward as a wing back but there's knowing when to push on and I'm not sure he's mastered that yet.

Yes, at this level teams and players benefit from being coached to play simple but effective football. It’s all very well in the Prem and to some extent the Champ having all this deep, scientific footballing philosophy, they have the multi-multi million pound players to put it into practice. I our league the maxim should be ‘Keep it simple, stupid’ One ofthe biggest bugbears for Walsall fans was DC boasting about all his badges.

I agree to an extent, but for me it's about horses for courses. The more complex technical aspects can be phased in once a team is confident and well drilled. When form dips, I think it's important to recognise that what works when its going well, doesn't really work when its going badly. Back to basics should mean just that, not changing from 3-5-2, to 4-2-3-1, to 4-3-2-1, to 4-3-3 every match in a bid to try to find the right formula.

Putting aside your obvious sarcasm, don’t you think it interesting that DC achieved his back to back promotions before he gained all his coaching badges? I doubt very much if Walsall fans gave a single flying one over the back to backs, they were concerned solely with the here and now and the constant changes in formations, tactics and personnel whilst boasting about all his coaching qualifications, which I suspect you very well know.

Thought it would be nice to mention Josh Grant. For some reason when he does well he seems to go unnoticed.
He - in my opinion - had a great game last night. His fitness and desire to get around the pitch looked great, and he is getting better every game. I can see him becoming a very important asset to this team.

He showed us what he could achieve last night. Was it because TW told him to keep it simple, keep his position in relation to his team mates and use his size and strength to unsettle the opposition?
