Tommy Widdrington role changeThe Club can confirm that role of Director of Football has been removed from the Club's Board of Directors structure.
Tommy Widdrington will still serve as a Director and will be in charge of outgoing loan deals and will be tasked with ensuring the strategic vision of the first-team is adhered to at both U23s level and within the Club’s Academy.
The move has been made in light of the Club's recent relegation.
Earlier this week, Chris Gibson MBE was appointed to the Club's Board of Directors, as a non-executive Director.
Club President Wael Al Qadi said, "As a result of our relegation and the position we currently find ourselves in, Joey and his team are now fully in charge of the recruitment process. We have therefore eliminated the role of Director of Football.
“Tommy will remain on the Club's Board and will be in charge of creating a loan department, that will be tasked with establishing relationships with other clubs.
"Tommy will also be responsible for mirroring the first-team philosophy, that will be set by the first-team Manager, across the Academy structure.”

See tommy’s been removed from recruitment and demoted to setting the academy philosophy or whatever that means.
Why hasn’t he been sacked and removed as a director completely after last season? More weak leadership from Wael.

Sounds to me he is all but fired. Demoted but kept on the payroll rather than being paid off.
Will be interested to see how long he lasts at the club.

It could be said that we’re putting all our eggs in one basket-case.

More weak leadership from Wael. Him concentrating on the youth and loans etc, will give Joey and his team more time to concentrate on the first time. Plus if we start poorly and Joey gets sacked, we will still have someone around, that will be able to help the new manager know what is happening at the club etc. If we sacked him, you probably would have moaned that Joey is having too much control over everything😂.

So when Barton leaves, doubt he will be here for years, we start all over again!

It could be said that we’re putting all our eggs in one basket-case. Which managers have full control of recruitment? And by that I mean no chief scout, DoF to help them? Glad TW is gone but Wael should have sacked him and used his wages on getting someone with a good track record to assist JB. Now we’re just a one man show.

It could be said that we’re putting all our eggs in one basket-case. Agreed last season was terrible, but the recruitment wasn’t too bad before that. If Joey messes up, we will have to redo everything again. Maybe that’s why Widdrington is being kept around. But still putting a lot of faith in Barton.

Eddy Jennings will be appointed shortly and will assist Joey Barton with recruitment

What does that new role even mean? He’s in charge of overseeing Barton’s footballing philosophy throughout the development squad? Haha

Haha Yep, sorry but this new role seems like nothing more than a "jobs for the boys" type thing because Wael wants to appease both Tommy and Joey. It's a bizarre situation. Hopefully it all works out for the best.

That’s got to be the most polite sacking in football ever. I wonder if Tommy’s ego will allow him to turn up and pick up the pay cheque. I would imagine he’ll be looking for a new and exciting challenge soon

I wonder if Widdrington might end up at Port Vale with Darrell Clarke

It could be said that we’re putting all our eggs in one basket-case. Grimsby did that with Holloway.Only time will tell.
