He’s a million miles from an England call up.
Can’t even get minutes for his club and third in the pecking order, Gashead bias aside & no matter how talented we all know he is, that Three Lions debut is a world away right now. The depth of the England side especially in attacking areas is obscene. I’m not surprised he’s jumped at the jock opportunity. McTominay did it for the same reasons.

There are loads ahead of him in the England pecking order, he might be starting to think, he would never be a regular starter for England. There’s two players at his own club more likely to get an England call up than he is for a start Exactly, plus it's not like most of the attacking players England have are old. Saka is only a year older than Anderson, Foden is still only 23. Look at the quality in the under 21 side, then you have players like Mount and Bellingham that can play anywhere across the midfield or out wide. Bellingham is younger than Elliot. Loads of established top flight players, that are of a similar age. He's miles off an England call up.

He was an utter cheat code in League 2, would be brilliant in League 1 and likely the Championship too. He's still only 20 and should improve further and would maybe be a starter for smaller Premier League teams. As for England and a top 6 team, I'm not 100% convinced yet he's there or has the pace required to reach that top tier. Would be happy to be wrong though

If I was Billy right now I'd be asking for a loan to a club where he is guaranteed games.
IMO he would get games at Wolves, Luton, Sheff U, Everton and Crystal Palace all of which need a pacey outlet in their teams and have nothing in the Billy mould.
In the championship someone like Ipswich, WBA, Coventry or Southampton would really fit into Billy's style of play, particularly Coventry and Ipswich.

At the moment England have a surplus of talented, young players who are all playing regularly. Elliot will get his chance with Newcastle this season with all their games to come. So, a good choice to select Scotland esp at a time when Scotland seem to be coming good again. Those suggesting he puts in a transfer request are way off. We’re still only in August, just! He will be looked after by Newcastle and Eddie H and he is in the right place to improve. Not sure there’s another manager with a better record of improving players than he’s with at the moment. I’d be surprised if, by the end of the season, he hasn’t made at least 15-20 starts. UTG!

Isn't there some new rule now where a player under 21 has to play three competitive international games to tie them to that country? So it could be a while yet until he is tied down.

As an interested neutral, I support neither England nor Scotland, I tend to agree with a lot of comments on here that Anderson is just trying to get international football, a lot of folk would after all. For some players, they'll only choose 'their country' like Ryan Giggs, could have played for England but chose to play for Wales, but for others it's just a case of being an international footballer, if he chooses Scotland it's guaranteed, if he chooses England, he may never get the chance. Interesting that he pulled out of the squad though, maybe his family or Eddie Howe's had a word or something has come from the England set up.

Which maybe OK whilst he's a youngster but what happens in a few years time when Newcastle are Champions League winners and their star winger is stuck at home whilst his English teammates are all off to the World Cup finals.

I believe that's just rubbish anyway as he was born in Ireland. He will be tied to Ireland after just one more competitive game. Didn't Anderson reject a few Scotland U21 call ups recently? I guess at the time he wasn't too sure but whilst he is some way from the England senior team, you would think he could get himself in the U21 squad. I am sure he is just injured though! __PRESENT__PRESENT__PRESENT__PRESENT

Elliot is very close to breaking into the Newcastle side on a more regular basis. If he does, given that his competition for a left wing role is Harvey Barnes and Antony Gordon, he’s probably one good run of games away from being in contention for England squads. That’s how he’s got to see it, anyway. No doubt in my mind that he could be playing week in week out for a mid table or lower premier league side right now. That’s not based on seeing things through blue-tinted spectacles, it’s through seeing his cameo performances. He always looks a threat when coming on and really deserves more of a chance.

Sounds he's just making up the numbers due to injuries not actually called up to train with them.

We will go out to the first decent side we face 0-1 or on pens. Weak leaders make weak teams and Southgate is a bottler who has less charisma than a dischcloth and a backbone made of cotton wool

Funny how some people suggest Elliott should leave England and play for the Auld Enemy as it his best opportunity.
If he thinks himself as English, why would he want to represent anyone else?
I doubt on club level the same people suggested to Matty Taylor he should leave Rovers to play for City as it his best financial opportunity?
