Funny how some people suggest Elliott should leave England and play for the Auld Enemy as it his best opportunity. If he thinks himself as English, why would he want to represent anyone else? I doubt on club level the same people suggested to Matty Taylor he should leave Rovers to play for City as it his best financial opportunity? He’s not “leaving” England, he’s been playing for Scotland since U16! If anything he’s leaving Scotland.

Hard to make a case for “leaving Scotland” if he was born and bred in England, his parents being English and only one of his four grandparents being a Scot.

I think the point Fanboy was making was before he made the big time he was happy to play for and represent Scotland. Now he’s verging on a starting place he is undecided if he wants to continue for them or switch allegiances to England. I love the kid and follow him with interest, but it’s not a good look in my opinion.

I have always thought it a joke when you can represent a country due to where a grandparent was born. Parents - fine, but grandparents birthplace is a stretch too far. I guess it helps our little neighbours field a team though

I remember Grealish doing the same with Ireland and England, although I'm not sure that anybody really believed that he might choose Ireland!

If their Granddad was the main influence behind them getting into football (bearing in mind his grandad was a former professional footballer it is possible) or sometimes it is the Grandparents that have brought their child up.

My late Dad was from Dublin, and my son has always had an affinity with Ireland. Grandparents aren't exactly distant relatives in the great scheme of things, the lineage is important in some families.

I heard on the radio the other day that Tony Cascarino got into the Ireland squad because of an adoptive grandad , so it stretches even further. Team mates on the show were joking he only got in because he sipped a Guiness once, made me laugh

He wasn't really eligible to play for Ireland, as his grandfather was not a blood relative - although he didn't know that at the time. His mother only found out that she was adopted by her father, when he was on his deathbed, she didn't tell Cascarino until he retired from international football. The Irish FA considered whether to take his international caps away, although they decided against this.

Declan Rice even played a few games for the full Irish team. I have no issue with it. At the younger age groups it's hard to judge how good a player is or even know anything about them, also as a 15, 16, 17 year old if you're asked to play international Football it's pretty hard to turn down and it's valuable experience. I don't see an issue in taking your time and waiting to see if there's a genuine chance of playing for a better international team.

England have had quite a few, John Barnes and Raheem Sterling perfect examples. They are eligible simply because they lived in England for the required number of years.

I think you should play for the country in which you were born unless you have lived in another country for over half of your life.

Question -- This guy left us over a year a go. Why are we still on about him ? Time to let go. The Magnificent Seven Promotion will be remembered and cherished forever, the most incredible last day promotion victory possibly ever. In years to come, the team and other scorers will be largely forgotten, but the manager and the scorer of the seventh unbelievable goal that day that sparked some of the greatest celebrations in our history will be constantly replayed and remembered forever. Eliot Anderson has a unique place in our history and Gasheads will always follow his career with interest and fondness. 👍🏾
