Unbelievable, still think it’s pretty much mission impossible but if Stokes pulls this one off it’ll be his greatest ever cricketing achievement What time do they start again??

Two very well matched sides but the Aussies had 74 runs in extras.
With the Bairstow incident stoking up the team, can see England winning the next one.
Jimmy needs to be on top form at Old Trafford.

Can we ban cricket chat its a football forum Cricket, tennis, World Cups etc have always been tolerated in the main section on this site during the closed season. It's only once the season starts that the Mods move stuff to General Sport chat.

Not sure if we will see Jimmy there. He took a real old bruising from the short pitched crap that the Aussies were bowling. One knock was around his right shoulder area.

I'm not a massive fan of cricket in most of its forms but I've enjoyed actually watching a few sessions from the first 2 tests.
I'd almost consider myself borderline neutral but I have been really impressed with England's attitude and approach.
As always happens I guess the way they play will be sacrificed at the altar of success but I've enjoyed watching the 2 games a little and I'm glad I'm English. The Aussies are so dull, even if they win.

England are great to watch. Win, lose or draw.
'Bazball' is a breath of fresh air.
Australia are easily the best Test Match team in the World currently, and we've matched them pretty much over the 2 Tests so far.
You could say we've thrown it away and gifted it to the Aussies with the declaration in the 1st Test and being 188-1 in the 2nd Test, but this brand of Cricket is superb to watch and it's great for Cricket fans and even just for the casual viewer, you can tell that by the full houses and also the atmospheres, when have you ever heard a crowd as loud and raucous as that at Lords?
Trust the process and we will soon become the best Test team in the World I've no doubts.
There's still a few improvements to be made as Crawley isn't good enough, averaging just over 28 as an opening Batsmen is very poor, Johnny Bairstow probably deserves his place as a Batsmen but as a WK he's nowhere near as good as Ben Foakes and Jimmy Andersons days are pretty much over at 40 years of age.
Plus Jack Leach and Joffra Archer never being fit is a downside.
However Ben Duckett is superb though and Harry Brook and Josh Tongue are great prospects.
So all things considered to pretty much match the Aussies over the 2 tests so far is no mean feat.
Up The 'Bazball'. Bring it on!

Bazball is ok but the England players threw away the first test when they had been winning it over the first 4 and a half days due to stupid shots and thinking all they had to do was play Bazball. They will continue to play it I’m sure but the Aussies will lap it up, place their fielders in the positions they do and win. It’s ok to play that way against the other test teams but in an Ashes series against the best team and the best group of fast bowlers they do need to choose when to throw the bat and when not to do it. They were more or less outplayed by the Aussies in this game and had their best day today but it was too late by then. But there were great innings by Ben Stokes and Ben Duckett and after all the controversies from the day it was good to see how England reacted in disappointment. Well done to them. UTG!

You kind of make my point for me. I don't really care about the result of the games. I'm not particularly invested in either team. Watching the ashes is a bit like watching an FA cup final to me. They are just 2 teams I'm vaguely aware of. I've enjoyed some entertainment, and I'm not bothered about result. Your post backs up my guess that England won't be able to entertain because the need to actually win is greater which now I think about it is odd. All of us watch various sports to be entertained and distracted from life. Funny then that we value a pointless outcome over actually enjoying ourselves. I suppose I would say that, I hated Rovers under Coughlan. I thought it was dreadful to watch.

Perhaps, but I suspect if Rovers decided to just entertain and not care too much about the results it wouldn’t last too long. But I get your point about entertainment. I think England can beat Australia by playing entertaining cricket but they do need to engage their brains before thinking every ball can be hit for 6. England start the game wanting to entertain, the Aussies start the game wanting to win. UTG!

Rome wasn't built in a day. This Australia is a brilliant side that has been together for a number of years. While England are still a work in progress. Australia have two top quality opening batsmen in David Warner and Usman Khawaja who average over 45 and 48. While we still have Zak Crawley who only averages 28. They have Marnus Labuschagne another top quality batsmen who averages 55. While Ollie Pope as good a prospect as he is only averages 35. They have Steve Smith who has the greatest batting average since Donald Bradman and averages 60. They have a top WK in Alex Carey. While Johnny Bairstow can't catch a cold at the moment. They've also got a brilliant bowling attack in Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, plus a superb spinner in Nathan Lyon who has taken almost 500 test wickets. While England are still relying on a 40 Year old Jimmy Anderson, missing our quickest bowler in Joffra Archer and main spinner in Jack Leach, where we had to bring in Moeen Ali back from the wilderness. So all things considered to be taking it to the Aussies like we have been and playing such exciting, offensive Cricket at the same time is no mean feat. Have faith in the process. England will overtake the Aussies as the Number 1 Test Team in the not too distant future. I have no doubts about that.

Austalian players being heckled by members in the Long Room, along with a bit of jostling - who knew it was this boistorous!
Born and bread in Bath, my team is Somerset - is that allowed now that I live just over the border in Wiltshire?

Somerset should never be allowed full stop. City are Somerset, Gas are Gloucestershire.
You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself, Tilly!

Which is the very reason why, with some common sense, England can beat them. England should be more selective as to when they play certain shots. I love the cricket they play now but if Brooks, Root and Duckett had not played such silly shots when the Aussies were just waiting for them we’d probably be level in this series and not 2-0 down, having won the first test and lost the second. We were completely out-played in this test (apart from the last day when it was effectively over). UTG!

Bazball is revolutionary as far as test cricket is concerned. for it to be successful you need a fair sprinkling of luck i.e. catches need to be dropped, shots hit in the air need to dissect fielders and not go straight to them etc. It is inevitable that there will be days when your luck runs out and you suffer freak dismissals, astounding catches and all sorts of other 'injustices'. Few if any achieve a high score , never mind a century, without having a slice of luck or two. The Australians are tough competitors and no mugs and would have studied England's tactics in detail and come up with a counter, hence the field settings , and their bowlers strategy. It should not have been that hard for England to see what was happening and counter the Aussies tactics, we didn't and duly fell into the trap. Fair play to the Aussies, i hope England have a plan 'B' now and don't abandon Bazball the first time it's challenged, sure they will come up with a counter plan for rest of series, if they don't ,well the result is inevitable.

Born and bread in Bath, my team is Somerset - is that allowed now that I live just over the border in Wiltshire? Yes the heckling in the long room was hilarious, the freemasons were furious! One other thought, are Ben Ducket and Matty the Snake Taylor one of the same?

I was even on the books of the Somerset Academy in my early days!!! Don't listen to any of them - there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a Somerset supporter whilst being a fervent Gashead at the same time.
