We re clearly a "mid table" side in a division that has about 14 mid table sides this year. A couple if wins and we eye play offs, some abject performances and we nervously look down below. Fact is, we will continue to be inconsistent. Play well against "better" teams, struggle against those that physically out perform us. So we will yo yo from likely top 10 to worried about 17th/18th and end up probably smack bang in the middle.
We have limited options, but need to be picking teams and styles for the occasion.

Also seems obvious we didn't revert to "Barton Ball" it's just we were up against one of those teams happy to sit back and surrender possession. Yeah ok so when that happens you play a big diagonal ball to one side of the pitch in to dangerous areas and get your most creative players around your target man and overload that side - percentage football. You have a wing back ( which we played with ) giving width on the other side so you can switch it and open up their block. If we’d done that , won possession in their third played a cross field pass , opened them up and scored I don’t think anyone including you would have been complaining but we didn’t. You don’t play 300 passes across your back line in the hope something will change when clearly it’s not gonna. It’s the basics vs a low block. Taylor and his team can be forgiven for not working it out from the off but over the course of the game we probably got worse at the things we were poor at. But like I said in another post , that style of play generally hasn’t been Taylor’s way forwards so hopefully he’ll have learned his lesson and get us playing like a league 1 side again on Saturday. Yea but teams that play that way (very few higher level ones) play that way most of the time. It's really not for me though. Could have done that and failed even more - especially with players not primed to pay that way. Then Taylor would have got it in the neck for abandoning the Barton way. Any self respecting team with eyes on developing football fit for a higher level works out how to break down a team playing like that without switching tactics too dramatically. Last night didn't have a group that knew itself well enough but it's doable as Leeds showed last night (albeit with a talented and very pacy set of players!)

Spot on Si, if we finish 10th or top 12 with this lot then it’s been a good season and upgrade on 17th last season. This is a Bristol Rovers Masters side, I play for a Vets side on Sunday and we are allowed 4 blokes over 35 I think but they all can’t be on the pitch at the same time, it’s been like watching us the last 2 seasons. If you ever wanted to be a physio to learn the trade, it would be with us, you’d be on real personal terms with a lot of them!

Really poor. Arguably worse than the Exeter home game. Can't think of any postives to come out of that.
Fleetwood looked stronger, quicker and more determined from start to finish.
It's pretty clear we haven't got the players to compete with that sort of side, particularly in poor conditions. Our performances against the likes of Wycombe, Fleetwood and Exeter at home in the last 4 or 5 weeks highlight some serious weaknesses that we'll have to address in the summer if we're to have any chance of improving on a mid table finish.
The defending for both goals last night was awful. Two of the worst goals we've conceded all season.
We never managed to put Fleetwood under any sustained pressure and created very little. Can't say anyone impressed me last night but Vale and Thomas at least put in some effort.
Just when you thought it couldn't get much worse our top scorer gets himself sent off in injury time.
Not looking forward to Burton much after that as I can see it being a very similar type of game.

Should we congratulate Taylor on his tactical masterpiece? I see Friend And Grant as the next Shearer and Sutton attacking force. Still can't understand why he plays a lone striker against a team nervously fighting relegation. Although our striker force is very limited . A more attacking style of play could of resulted in a different result. Still unsure about Taylor !. See all the pearl grasping, morally superior monotone Matt supporters are out in force, with a number seemly wanting to blame Joey for a diabolical performance last night which included a number of the players which had been brought into the team by "its their fault" Matty. In fairness to Tails the last two performances were really good, the four defeats previously not so; got to say last night getting drenched from head to toe I just could not understand why he decided to play all three loanees, why when we were two nil down he brought on defenders and why he waited so long to bring on "super Johnny Marquis". That said, I still currently believe the team can earn 12 more points to reach safety, providing we don't have to play in any driving rain. Utg.

Surely most Vets will be over 35 as it takes a lot of schooling to be a vet?

Glad Barton went in the end , happy with the appointment of Taylor . But… he picked the wrong side last night , the tactics were poor and his substitutions were just baffling .

The problem Taylor as is the bar is set high. The board openly said or indicated " we have a top 6-8 budget ". You would need a data geek to work out his record to Bartons but I think it's only marginally better. We certainly ain't in the top 8 are we ?. Of course Taylor needs to use this 'top' budget in the summer. What if he's not in the top 8 after 13 games?. Is it the managers wrong or spinning by the board?. Eg : we were 5 points off top 8 under Barton and nows its 6

But… he picked the wrong side last night , the tactics were poor and his substitutions were just baffling . 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 DC took us down with some strange tactics and brought us back up on a Higgs budget. MT picked the wrong side last night, but Vaughan, whoever would not have stopped those goals from midfield. Friend never played because he spends most of his time laid up on his back. Taylor out injured, it’s clear Wilson can’t play twice in a week, the defence is shot to pieces and that includes Hunt as well. No Beef can’t come in perform, Bond coaches the defence, he’s seen enough of him. Until we get a Macca or Tony Craig at the back, a sweeper behind one of them, we are going to struggle. All this quarterback passing and sideways passing, first and foremost we need defenders that can defend and defend set pieces. We need a CB like Elliott Moore from Oxford with someone like Locks, Hinton, Byron, sweeping next to them with a yard of pace. We need a left back not targeted every week, we’ve never replaced Lee Brown who had the muscle to Marshall a winger wide. And as for RB, George Williams, Gibbons, all of them, either fodder or can’t stay fit.

Agree on this but you are not getting a good no9 in the January window for peanuts but will get a free or lad like Charlton did for £300k in June with a year to run, no one sales good strikers if in relegation or promotion in January unless stupid money. Every team needs a strong spine, we’ve had Nicholls Mrk2 in goal all season and arguably the most injured defence in our history. Wilson, Grant, Hunt, Friend, Gordon, Taylor, have also had proper injuries this season, only Crama has stayed fit. It astounds me how they were alllowed to sign some of them, they met Friend at the Marcus Stewart testimonial match!!!!!!!! I will say it again, the manager was poor last night, he’s inherited a mid table squad where fraud was probably commited.
