Think this deserves its own spot as will be absolutely the most critical signings we make this window.
I am happy with the type of players MT/GF are signing so far. Hutchinson and Mola on the back of Conteh, plus hopefully Ellison and Moore to follow shortly tick a lot of boxes.
BUT they are harder to tick for the top positions.
We have - Chris Martin - No9, will score goals. Probably going to be used 60mins plus ideally. Not our first choice starter. - Jevani Brown - No10 that has failed to get near the expectations, other that one flick and assist. Step up or move on. Unlikely starter or even bench right now.
We need - Proper first choice striker. Ideally a 9 but someone like Evans at 10 with Martin and a young loanee 9 from the prem/champ would work too. - Pace. Really missing from last season. We need it on the wing and up front. - Options. Sinclair, Thomas, Hutch, Evans, Brown all offer options as 2nd strikers, but feel we still miss something. Maybe just pace.
Thoughts?

A lot of managers tend to say that strikers are the hardest to sign and a lot of clubs have to wait until later in the window. With Martin suspended, we don't have a lot of time though!

We need a minimum of two decent strikers - One very mobile and able to harass and chase down defenders who have the ball - The other someone who can hold up the ball and bring other attacking options into the game
BOTH able to move with the ball at pace and equally able to put the ball in the net.
I know of one we are allegedly chatting with that will divide opinion - Hoping we sign a hungry guy from lower leagues as well.

About time we unearthed a lower league gem
We were once very good at identifying strikers but have let this side of our recruitment suffer over the last ten years or so. Collins and the snake were 2 of the better ones but we let them go for relative peanuts.
Fully trust MT and GF to identify the right characters, hopefully young fit strikers who can provide that element of raw uncertainty
They will certainly benefit from learning from our very own hot shot Martin, who I hope is being lined up as a striker coach after he retires.
The signings thus far indicate we are taking a targeted approach to recruiting, with youth and development a key component. Long May it continue. We have the core of experience already in Wilson, Hunt, Rossiter and Martin. For me the way to go is players from lower divisions who still have the hunger to improve and better themselves.

We need an out and out striker with some pace.
Because we're so short of options in this area it’s almost as if we need anyone who can play that role but if they are no good they would be soon be found out by the time September comes. But MT seems to have signed players so far who have appeared ready to improve us, not just squad fillers. Conteh, Hutchinson and Mola has been a good start. And that is building up a kind of trust that MT and GF know what they’re doing and what they’re looking for. I hope we’re looking at the best of the lower leagues and even NL and below to find what we want. I wouldn’t rule out loans from leagues above but that would probably come near the end of the window if we can’t recruit what we need permanently. But it appears that the signings we’ve made so far have come very quickly, no rumours. Things are being kept very quiet. (I know the keeper we didn’t get seems to have rolled on a bit so hopefully a lesson learnt.)
But sorry percy, no names for strikers. Although I did wonder if we’d had a conversation with Stockley before he went to PV. Glad we didn’t get him though.
UTG!

The Korey Smith rumour on the other thread? He is a midfielder not a striker. More of a Utility man these days. Warne played him at right back a good few times last year.

So are we thinking with bits of money being spent on most signings so far, that we wont have one big "marquee" signing? Or a big surprise still to come. I am thinking Will Evans who I thought we may go all out for wont be coming (more of a 10 than a 9?). So someone at a prem club U21s on loan or a non-league starlet more likely now?

Ruari Paton at Queens Park could be worth a look. Bit of a gamble but at 23 years old fits with the profile of players we've seen so far. 17 goals in the Scottish 2nd tier last season and 22 in the 3rd tier the season before. Think Port Vale and Mansfield had been linked at one point this summer.
Still interested in who the one that might divide opinion is as well though? 🤔
