Slightly surprised to see it only guaranteed to extend until the end of the season with only a club option to extend next year. Was expecting a locked in 18 month deal at least, maybe there's an easy extension clause for him to achieve, but not too bad in case he gets injured or something and we decide we don't want/need him next season. It's guaranteed until the end of next season if Rovers want to extend it, surely that makes more sense than just giving him an 18 months contract and he could then ease off for the rest of this season.

Looks like he’s gone to Colchester they offered him a better deal unconfirmed yet by Rovers In future, I might just listen to our manager who seems to know just a little more about what is happening than bluedave. Onwards to our next signing…

Lot of chap slung at the owners and their team today but this is 💯 the correct deal. Don’t think any of us expected it, maybe in years gone we’d have given him straight 18 months (or more)

I meant we can easily end it at the end of the season rather than straight 18 months, sorry if I worded it wrong. I think it does make more sense I just expected it'd be 18 months straight rather than an option.

If true good. Why would we give out a 1 year deal to someone that is 35 and was unfit! If he had picked up an injury, like a lot of players do in that situation. You and others would have been moaning about the board giving it a one year deal to someone not playing. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. It's funny how you seem to know everything after. But are not speaking up at the time?? Chris Martin is not a George Friend, a Rossiter or a Wilson who have averged less than 22 games a season their whole careers sometimes less. This wasnt a player who had spent last season injured and dropped a league to get fit. Hes a regular 40 game a season marksman who scores goals at a higher level than we have been the whole of his career. It was obvious in the first 3 games he played in that Marquis couldnt continually replicate his form which kept him out of the side to start with and that soon as Martin gained his match fitness he was far and away the better option. This was obvious by around the middle of october. At that point we should have extended his deal to the end of the season and looked to move Marquis on in Jan. Agreed. You need to be proactive in football or you stand still or move backwards and others overtake you. Marquis has been useless 90% of the time that he’s been here and I can’t understand why he’s still here.

Colchester must be gutted 🤣 If you think they’re gutted now, just wait until they find out they’ve actually signed that bloke from Coldplay 😳🤣

At least we get a bit a good news . His goals will be crucial to us staying in this division . Provided , all fingers and toes crossed , he stays
injury free . Personaly happy with the contract , and should , and thats a big should , line up an equally prolific scorer come the summer.

A small crumb of comfort but vital that Chris has signed.I’m concerned that Matt Taylor might walk unless he gets more backing from the owners as he’s currently managing with one hand tied behind his back

He has worked hard to earn that contract extension. In the longer-term I hope he stays around to coach a younger generation of strikers.

Yeah I like his effort but that’s all really. Thing is when we signed him I remembered him from his Doncaster days where he was a very clinical finisher. The John Marquis we signed is like a completely different player. I’m always up for giving a player time but he’s been here I think 18 months and I can’t see him getting his scoring touch back now after such a long time. Collins i think will come good again and I’m personally not going to write him off yet although I am starting to wonder as I think we all are. It’s Great we’ve signed Martin on again but I think we still need a mobile pacey striker with good anticipation and off the ball running to complement Martins style of play. Also a midfield general and a centre half who haven’t got lots of previous with injuries and I think we’ll have a top half squad. Obviously we won’t get all that in January but if we can do half of that this window then it should at least keep us up because let’s face it right now we’re in free fall and there’s a long way to go yet. We only need to average a point per game so should be doable but we’ve been relegated from this position at this point in the season before so I’m not getting too complacent and I certainly hope the owners aren’t.
