Martin doesn't really pressure defences like Marquis or A N Other might. If he doesn't score, he doesn't contribute much else. He does seem to regularly score though, so it's really hard to knock him. People used to moan that Cureton did nothing all game, but he also seemed to score every other match. Whilst he doesn't press his man. He does close down a passing lane when we're setting our def structure. Fair enough, my post wasn't intended as a negative one against him. His finishing is as good as anyone I've seen play for Rovers, buyt his all round game has some limitations that comes with his age.

Ref gave him nothing yesterday so we really struggled in the 20 mins Oxford were on top as there was no outlet. He needs to mix it up when this is the case. Why I only scored him 6. But he always scores so deserves his place starting. Ref always give him nothing, it must be the same ref. His off the ball work is like man v boys sometimes, you can see how niggly, physical standing his ground (we haven't had this since jch in his prime) brings to the team. None of us should take him for granted, I scored him more because while the attention goes to other people who had fantastic games themselves, CM goes quietly about his business scoring very important goals at very important times. It's an experienced knack and priceless.

It's not all lost just because he's not in the face of centre half.

As a lone striker he is outnumbered by 2 or 3 central defenders. Chasing down a fullback could give the oppo central defenders more options to receive the ball and bring it forwards. CM staying central gives the oppo fewer options and it means he's in a better position when we do have the ball. You can often see some players will be wasting energy chasing shadows resulting in the team losing shape and leaving spaces. The key is knowing where, when and who to press.
Edit that is unless you have Thiery Henry and even then Arsenal used to instruct him to stay central high up the pitch.

.... and even then Arsenal used to instruct him to stay central high up the pitch. At school, we called that "goal mooching"!
