Always sits uncomfortable with me when I see articles which highlight diversity/homophobia etc unnecessarily.
We're not racist, if you want to come, black, white, asian or green then come and watch us, end of.

That said, this article did say they went in with bias assuming racism was at play, only to reveal....er, it wasn't. Got doubt their numbers too. They only counted 6 black/ethnic minorities?? Where did they stand and how long did they count for?? I accept the fan base is predominantly White though.

I'd be amazed if this thread is still here in the morning.
Be a lovely surprise if it was.

Would be great to see more BME fans coming along but it seem to be an issue in other sports attendances such as rugby, cricket (unless playing Pakistan or India) and athletics as well. I'm not sure why and if anyone had a good idea about boosting BME attendance my guess is the club would be receptive.

My problem with this is that there are simply more white people in this part of the world so therefore at any event the number of white people will far outweigh other ethnicities. Unless it's an event that targets particular ethnicities, which I don't believe football is.

Yeah stuff like this seems to me to perpetuate the notion that there is some difference even though I think the vast majority of fans only really care about the colour of your shirt. If I'm wrong and somehow minority groups are dissuading from attending then that is sad and maybe we should look in to that but if hope that's not true in this day and age.

It's an interesting report but lacking depth in statistics to get a better idea of racial diversity in the lower leagues.
"16% of the crowd in the 14/15 Premier League season were from BAME groups, which roughly equates to the BAME makeup of Bristol." This is fine but there are a load of teams from very diverse areas in the Prem - London, West Brom, Leicester.
They also refer to changes at Bradford, which has a more diverse population (67% White) than Bristol (84% White).
If a club actively wants to improve diversity among the fan base, I would suggest reaching out to local communities / groups, creating questionnaires which ask 1) whether there is an interest in local football, 2) If racism is a factor in non attendance, and 3) If there are other factors such as price, travel, etc.

Why can't they just be 'fans'? More Indian and Pakistani at football......well, the ones I work with don't like football. If they want to come, then they will.

Terribly sad that the PC brigade don't see a person but have to label everyone black or white, Christian or Muslim. Perhaps we should go the whole hog and provide a selection of badges for everyone to wear a nice LGBT or BAME or second class (for straight white non disabled men) or a star if David for Jewish people, you know just something inoffensive. With all the space at the new UWE we could even provide segregated areas for each minority. These PC types certainly believe in progress and ensuring racism and religious discrimination is kepr alive and kicking

Agreed GGMI - I'll stand and watch any sport with anyone! No problem at all. Sport should break down barriers as those watching have a common interest.
I do think things like The Bangla Bantams and Punjabi Rams supporter groups (mentioned in the article) are odd - that immediately indicates separation of one group of fans from another due their background? I'll assume that any one can join the Bangla Bantams or Punjabi Rams. The banner "Bristol Rovers" is all that is needed to embrace our club. And I'm happy to teach them "Come and join us, come and join us, come and join us over here"!!!
