...... It was a cold but sunny winters day that greeted us as we arrived at Roots Hall and there hasn't been that much change there other than some seats since our visit about 45 years ago when we clinched promotion with a 0-0 draw. I remember that night well although the following day I remember a lot less!!
I also remember that night well but for rather different reasons. I was in Zurich, Switzerland and asked my future wife to marry me as part of the promotion celebrations. I recall that the 0-0 result and promotion accolade was repeated on Radio Luxembourg well into the night. There is little else I remember about that great night which will always have a special place.
Thanks for all your reports Steve - they are much appreciated.

My first glimpse of a match at Eastville as an 8 year old was a Western League Division 1 Saturday game between Bristol Rovers Colts and Trowbridge Town on the 15th February 1958. Dad was driving past the ground and we called in to see part of the match. I have recently established that Rovers won the game 5-0 and the attendance was 3,700.
My first proper match was a Division 2 end of season evening game on 30th April 1959 against Sheffield Wednesday that we won 2-1 before 16,653.
My most recent game Barnsley away on 27th October - another defeat, this time 1-0.

Signs?
I suppose that if the deadline was 12.00 noon for signing a forward and that it is now 2.35pm the signs are that we will be signing someone today. Alternatively the club may have sought to avoid a melt-down by withdrawing any mention of signage.

Would anyone like to see Tom Nichols with his head shaved? Would look like a new player and might scare the opposition as a potential "hardman". Would stop all this playing around with his hair during games.

A Sunderland fanatic - Craig Davies - has produced a brilliantly scripted article for Roker Report: An Open Letter to Potential Signings: Why choose Sunderland? Well, here’s whyrokerreport.sbnation.com/2018/6/27/17503790/an-open-letter-to-potential-signings-why-choose-sunderland-well-heres-whyObviously designed to ensure players like Gavin Reilly join the Black Cats because of their fantastic history. Glad that Gavin did his research: “I have done my research and I know that there’s a great following from Rovers fans and hopefully they will support us again in their numbers this season and we will do our best to give them something to cheer.” www.bristolrovers.co.uk/news/2018/july/03.07.18-reilly-signs/Reading between the lines the new Sunderland manager - Jack Ross - was Gavin's manager at St Mirren last season. I assume that Gavin did not fancy being under Ross at Sunderland even though offered a contract by the Black Cats. Normally a player will want to move with his manager when the opportunity arises.

I have just been told exactly what the initial poster said on page 1. Apparently the source came from a well respected employee at the club, and the announcement is expected sometime within the next fortnight. Apparently the plan is for us to move to the new stadium in 2020, when the Mem will be sold off for whatever. Only time will tell if there is any truth behind this, but the source is not the type of person to bullshit and why would he anyway? He is definitely not someone that frequents this or any other forum, and I am more than happy to believe this could be correct. Obviously the improvements underway at the Mem at present are aimed at tiding us over for the next couple of seasons.
There have been too many false dawns and disappointments. Perhaps there is some movement behind the scenes but we all know that if would take until at least 2020 to sort out a new planning application let alone move into a new stadium.

I used to run a club called Sicklesmere United in the Bury St Edmunds area. I started with a team for my eldest son in 1989/90 and the club grew year by year to 20 teams (before eventually imploding). One of the last teams to be formed at Under 8 included a talented young player called Ed Upson. I cannot remember much about the lad except his manager's plaudits for him. Out of some 400+ players that passed through the club, Ed was the only one that made it as a professional footballer. Less than than 10 made it into non-league (steps 5 & 6) and only one other got as high as step 3.
Strange that I should have in a small way assisted a future Bristol Rovers player in the heart of East Anglia.

In terms of high skill levels we now have a first tier (Premier League) basically made up of foreign players and a second tier with a sizeable number of foreign players.
With few foreign players in 1973/74 it would suggest that a third tier (Third Division) player would probably be playing fourth tier (League Two) football today (and possibly lower) as they would be pushed lower down the pecking order because of the foreign influx.
Jim Eadie and one or two others of our promotion team would be earning reasonable money in the National League. Just not fit enough? Smoking heavily? Drinking? Poor diet?
No complaints - I enjoyed those great times.

Regrettably none of the 73-74 team would be fit enough and would struggle in today's football.
You only have to look at old clips to see how slow and laboured the football was.
Never mind I really enjoyed it at the time and the 8-2 win at Brighton that I witnessed when living a few miles along the coast was out of this world. Never to be forgotten.
