Related to this - I was impressed by what their chairman has said about next season. It would be nice to hear something similar from Wael as it would also back-up DCs wishes made earlier. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/39846008I would only like to hear it if it was true. There's no point saying it for the sake of it to temporarily please fans, only for them to be disappointed later on when the club haven't met their expectations. I'm sure Wael will set a playing budget as high as possible under the FFP rules. However, DC likes value for money on his players, so whether he chooses to spend this whole budget or not is a different matter. In January he apparently had money to spend after the snake left but he opted not to because he didn't want to be ripped off. I can't imagine his mindset has changed since then. UTG!

A bit strange that Vale were happy to release him. Even if they'd have offered him the same contract then it would've meant someone would've had to pay a fee for him. Can only assume they couldn't afford his wages.
Yeah I did think that. He is a proven good player at this level though, scores goals and was used as an emergency striker on occasions. Bargain on a free imo.
Although the fact that they can't afford his wages after relegation doesn't necessarily mean that they are particularly high. They are a team that were getting home gates of less than 5000 this year which may go down next season. I can't imagine they will have much of a budget for next year which probably means they will have to let some of their better players go. From that link that you posted it seems as if they are already resigned to losing their best player, Nathan Smith, although we probably couldn't afford him if there are teams from higher divisions chasing his signature. Could possibly be a good loan option though if a Prem club signs him.

I think it is 10 or 11 on top of the ones we have offered contracts too. Assuming they all sign, since the last game, we would have lost from the first team squad: Lumley, Mildenhall, Puddy, JCS, Sweeney, Harris, Montano, Mansell, Gosling, Easter and James. Okay granted, the likes of Puddy and Gosling didn't feature but if we want a similar size squad, we are going to have to sign 10 or so players, maybe some on loan, so DC can operate with the same number of players. x2 keepers x1 CB x1 LB x1 CM x2 wingers x2 strikers (Yes I know that is 9 but I that is personally what I would be looking at). I think 2 wingers is optimistic considering we already have 3 (including Broom). If you offered me 2 decent wingers now or one quality one I would rather have the latter and we would then have Moore and Broom as backup to Bodin and the new starter. I would agree with the rest. I think the 1 centre back needs to be a quality replacement for Sweeney unless if Burn is good enough to fill that role. If we were to get Sweeney or someone of that quality again, then I would consider telling Hartley to look for a new club as our defensive record with him in the side was poor. Partington and J. Clarke's versatility means that we have got sufficient cover in that position so again I would rather spend the money on one quality player than two average ones. UTG!

Too much negativity on here today. Just wanted to bump this so everyone remembers what a great state we are in as a club with this man at the helm. UTG! Too much negativity so you bump a thread about losing our best player to our bitter rivals for next to nothing? It wasn't a negative thread though! Who could you be negative looking at that face??

i think now is the time we have to be resigned to the fact, that unless we hear something soon, the UWE project to build a new stadium for Bristol Rover will be abandoned. No other football club in world football has waited to long to get a new stadium built. Quite honestly this is embarrassing and a kick in the teeth for all us gasheads who were whooping with joy 4 years ago. Since then we have had the lost fight with Sainsburys and now it seems that we cannot even negotiate with UWE. This Is a sorry state of affairs. I find it very strange that we now don't receive any news regarding the negotiations with UWE. Are they even talking to each other? I have a funny feeling that this is not happening. We have now been at the Memorial Stadium for 21 years, and I'm afraid, sadly to say, that we will never ever leave. RIP UWE STADIUM PROJECT....IT WAS NEVER EVER GOING TO HAPPEN! If you are right then much of the trust developed by the new owners would be lost...no more cheering the family and Wael would have to think twice before mingling with the fans. A lot riding on what happens in the next couple of months. A bit of painting and cleaning the carpets will satisfy no one . I don't know about that. Why is everyone making out that if UWE doesn't happen then it's Wael and his family's fault? They have already made and are still making investments in the club which tells me that this isn't something to just pass the time for them. They are very successful investment bankers so they know what they are doing with their money don't you think? If they don't negotiate a deal with UWE then I believe its for the best and I'm glad they stepped in when they did so that we weren't taken for mugs under the old board. If that happens then we move on and look for another site to build the stadium where we are getting the best deal for the investment made. I think they know better than anyone on here what is a good investment and what isn't so just leave them to it and have faith that it's for the best of the club. UTG!

Hodges as it stands hasnt been offered a deal if what i read/understood is correct, our scholarship program has 16 players, non of whom were Hodges and there is no in-between so i think he is gone Mildy as said before has been offered a coaching role only, no player role so he is likely gone unless as stated he rejects and asks for a player role Puddy is gone/going at the end of his contract (31st june 2017)
So right now, we have 2 on the books but neither have been offered a deal so will be gone come July I hope not. He'll never leave!!

It would be great for me as I don't get to that many games so when I don't go it would give me the option to watch. I don't know how much it will affect attendance figures. Even if I could watch it in HD on Sky in my own living room, I would never choose to do that rather than go to the game if I had planned to go and watch beforehand. So I certainly wouldn't turn down the chance to go because I could see it on a sh**ty live stream on the internet. Don't know how many people think the same. UTG!

I think that Brad inman who has been put on the transfer list at the peterborough might be a decent signing, did well at crewe and was unlucky this season suffering a broken leg. Matt Godden from stevenage or James alabi from chester might also make decent signings. I like the James Alabi shout. I'd much rather us take a gamble on a young lad who's scored goals this season in League 2/Conference and is gonna be hungry to make the step up than someone who's a hasbeen from the Championship. Would be the much cheaper option too. UTH!

Yep. Success tourists. Because everyone who couldn't get to chelsea or Spurs this season chose BRFC in a run down ground to watch their football. Success breeds fans. They're still fans. (unless and until we get to be like Barca etc) You and others are missing my point. Im wondering if we now have say 1,000 more people going as part of their normal routine and will still go when we have a poor season at some time in the future. In other words has our core support crept up? I understand what you're saying. And yes I do think the core support has gone up. I think even if we were in the bottom half next season we would still average over 8000, especially if our season ticket sales reaches 6000. If you look at the stats, our support when we were last a top half team at this level under Trollope was only 7k. www.european-football-statistics.co.uk/attnclub/brir.htmWhen a team gets relegated their crowds normally drop, but when we went down into the Conference they never did. And since then the success we've had has meant that the crowds have just kept going up so support is as good as its been for 40 years. To answer your original question, I do think 90% of these will continue to support now, rather than just being fair weather glory hunters. UTG!

I'm sure DC will already pretty much know his budget. Just saying 'it still needs to be discussed' is another way of saying I'm not talking about it so don't bother asking. just my view but i dont think he knows what his budget will be. His recent interviews are gentle nudges to the board/owner saying "i need more money for next season" Perhaps you're right and the UWE negotiations may affect it as well. I was more just trying to make the point that even when DC does know his budget, hes not going to let anyone else know what it is. UTG!

All of this seems to suggest DC believes he can get better, much better than this squad, which is a squad which is achieving a respectable league one place. We have not offered a player the calibre of Christian Montano a contract. I am excited in what we may be getting in the summer. I do not understand the apathy on Gaffney. He's what Matt Harrold should have been. He has been leading the line brilliantly, like a new-school number 9. Also, I think he is useful as an option if we ever wish to play 1 up front. Harrison I am slightly surprised at but one thing you have to say is that when he wants it, he definitely has goals in him, and this is rarer than hens teeth. I have a feeling they will be the back ups though. Honestly, if DC is ditching much of this pretty good squad, I think we have some solid signings coming. The next phase of this revolution. The one thing I don't get from DC's interview is how can he suggest that he's going to bring in better quality than Monty, but then says he needs to sit down with Wael etc and discuss next season's budget? Wouldn't it make sense to discuss his budget before he announced his retained list? As far as Gaffney he really does blow hot & cold he's been shocking in some of our away games this season but in the next home match, he's been brilliant he really needs to up his consistency if we are aiming for top 6 next season. I'm sure DC will already pretty much know his budget. Just saying 'it still needs to be discussed' is another way of saying I'm not talking about it so don't bother asking.

Our defence in the second half of the season has been good enough for a top 6 finish though. Since the first game Sweeney and Lumley both played, we have conceded 16 goals in 17 games which is certainly good enough. It's our defence in the first half of the season and our lack of attacking threat in the second half that has cost us a top 6 finish unfortunately. Conceded 3 at Walsall, Bury, Gills and 4 at P'boro. So not sure about that although I think we need better in midfield to keep the ball better and help the defence out when out of possession. The Walsall game was before Sweeney's debut. 16 goals in 17 games is an average of 0.94 goals per game which is certainly good enough for top 6. In fact if we'd have had that record all season we'd have conceded 42 goals in our 45 league games, which would be the joint second best record in the league. We've also kept 8 clean sheets in that time. UTG!

That was my point if Burn isn't good to dislodge this season's two CB's, when we're "only" going to finish just inside the top 10, is he going to be good enough for a team which is, hopefully, aiming for a top 6 finish, he didn't look particularly strong at Coventry although at least we'd kept a clean sheet before he went off injured.

Does anyone think any of our under contract players will be subject to a bid from other clubs?
I think the most likely is probably Bodin. I also think that Lockyer and O. Clarke are players that are worthy of a transfer fee at the moment but that doesn't mean that other clubs will recognize that as they are not necessarily "stand-out" players.

Last season DC was in the position that he didn't know what league we were going to be in until May and probably didn't know what his budget was going to be until a while after that so he could hardly set his targets too early could he? That along with the fact that he didn't know which players of the current squad were going to make the step up and the fact that the Snake messed us about all summer would've made it very difficult.
This Summer is very different. The budgets will have been set a lot earlier and DC already knows which players are good enough and which ones aren't in order to move the club forward. Hopefully this means he'll be able to set his targets early and go all out to get them. In DC we trust. UTG!

He signed a new 3 year contract with QPR in August 2016 unfortunately. Oh my bad. I was going off what it says on this website: www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-lumley/profil/spieler/336367But then I have just found a news article saying he signed a 3 year contract in August. I'll just delete my previous post then to save my blushes.

I agree that it would be unfair to field a weakened side but it would be good to see Mildy, Manse and Easter involved in some way if it is going to be their last game. They need a big reception from the crowd for what they have done for the club in the past couple of seasons. We wouldn't be where we are without their contributions and we need to show our appreciation for that. UTG!
