If I'm not mistaken Mansell, Monkhouse, Turley, Sinclair, Parkes and McCrystal have all been captains before. That's a lot of candidates so regardless of who gets it I guess there will be a number of voices out there organising things across the pitch. Can only be a good thing in what is really still a young squad.

Good stuff. Now why couldn't we have conducted this level of fitness tests in the past?.. My guess is that he is still a number of weeks away from match fitness if he hasn't even started contact training yet. Hopefully he is a fit lad though so won't be too far behind on the fitness levels.

What was the Sinclair song mate, I didn't catch it. Stuart Sinclair, Stuart Sinclaaaaair, Small angry pirate whose covered in hair One bloke started it and sang it a few times before about 20-25 others joined in....

Following the matchday thread I have had a little browse at I thought I'd share my thoughts for whoever wants to read/agree with/disagree with/laugh at or whatever.
Sinclair will be a huge fans favourite and rightly so. Seen him twice now and I usually give a player 6 or 7 games before making an opinion on him but this lad was absolutely everywhere. Defended, attacked, passed well, tackled, headed, pretty much did everything. Even got his own song now too which I hope catches on.
Taylor looks a cut above the rest, scored one, one chalked off for offside and missed one other but other than that he always wanted the ball, was great in the air for his size and had a great first touch. Will be key this season.
Parkes looked a totally different player to last season, much more composed on the ball and no aimless punts upfield. Should have scored though from Harrison's ball.
We more than matched Cov I thought but it wasn't anywhere near their first team. With the 3-5-2 in the first half we played better but didn't create as much. Nice football though which was far more pleasing on the eye than the dross we have put up with in the last 3 or 4 years.
Second half we went to 4-4-2 and then 4-3-3 and although we created much more chances we also didn't have as much of the ball and mainly looked more dangerous on the break. It will be interesting to see how we line up in the league knowing most teams will come to the Mem with 5 in midfield and one up top.
Overall a decent game which we deserved at least a draw from. Bring on Grimsby now, no idea what system/team we will put out but my guess would be
Mildenhall
Lockyer McCrystal Parkes
Leadbitter Brown
Mansell Sinclair Monkhouse
Taylor Brunt
Subs White Turley Gosling Clarke new winger/striker

Probably the only thing I'll miss if/when we move to the UWE.

I think Monkhouse and Gosling are pretty creative. If we play a 3 man midfield like at Glos then I imagine one of those 2, Monkhouse I imagine, will play just ahead of Mansell and Sinclair. Leaving Clarke and Gosling as backup. That is ok in terms of numbers in there. Obviously we will need another winger if we play a 4 man midfield.
If Leadbitter can cover at left wing back and Lockyer or Sinclair on the right then Turley is a must sign with only 3 recognisable centre half's in the squad.
I think DC will bring in a couple of loanees at some point to give us some depth.
We are low on numbers certainly but it's not panic stations time just yet!

Very unusual to sign a player on a Sunday! So do we assume Leadbitter was the player we were led to believe would sign tomorrow or will we sign someone else (Turley) tomorrow in addition?

Now confirmed on twitter, Leadbitter signs...

Having seen Higgins I would be very disappointed if we didn't go for him. Not seen Leadbitter play before but if he signs over Higgins without even a trial game DC must rate him highly.
We need another centre back too as going in with only 3 leaves us no backup whatsoever. Turley would be brilliant with Higgins tomorrow please!

Hang on. Everything was pretty good but we won 4-3 against frickin Glocester! I don't get it. I take it you weren't there?... Like I said defensively we were poor at times, it should really have been 4-1 or even 4-0 if we could defend today. The first two goals were identical with balls played right through the left of our defence with both goals beating the keeper at the near post and the third was a header from a poorly defended corner. All 3 could/should have been prevented. Going forward and on the ball it was pretty good. Get the defence sorted and it looks good. The style of 'we will score more than you' is risky and although entertaining we cannot rely on scoring 3 or 4 every game! Still work ahead but much better performance than I was expecting.

Looked ok I thought. Tidy passing and worked hard and I wouldn't be disappointed if he signed but also wouldn't be disappointed if he didn't. Interesting to see him, Gosling and Monkhouse, all wingers by trade I think, play in the middle. Complete contrast from last season when we had so many central midfielders that they were forced out wide!

Just back and thoroughly enjoyed that! I do realise it was only a friendly against lower league oppo but I can confidently say I have not seen that brand of football being played by a Rovers side in years. No hoofball at all, a few long passes which were all aimed rather than punted, very refreshing. Parkes looks lean and half a yard quicker. Higgins needs to be signed ASAP, very promising performance down the right Monkhouse was excellent considering it was his first game in pre season All 3 forwards looked like they had goals in them, showed good movement and nice touches Sinclair will run himself to the ground for us, real fans favourite in the making
Only negatives were in defence. Defending set plays was worrying which is natural for a side with 3 trialists, a new formation and pretty much whole new team. This needs to be worked on. Brown didn't bring his shooting boots with him either and was the quietest of the players out there, looked a bit slow with his passing too. Some shocking defending for Glos's first two identical goals too, Mildy may have saved them though.
Overall all of the new signings impressed and I am looking forward to Grimsby now, I wasn't sure before but IF we can play that sort of football when it counts and tighten up in defence it will be an entertaining season. We have seen this before under Buckle when we were excellent in pre season and failed to live up to it so I'm not getting carried away yet. Well worth the tenner though if only for Parkes's goal, stunning!

Best of luck Smudge, fully deserve league one football. Score against the s**t and your legacy will be complete.
Now DC sign up Higgins and Turley before someone else does!

You reckon? I was under the impression from DC's comments today that the Higgins deal hinges on whether Smith leaves or not. I'm not sure Turley would be affected, well that was what I would have thought. Turley definitely won't be signed without Smudge leaving (well it might be announced before, but it would be because he's off) I'm not doubting you for a minute buddy but how on earth would you know this information?!! Surely this is something that the board and DC know and no one else? It makes sense, sort of, but we need another centre back regardless to if Smith goes or not, we currently have 3 dont we? so with the system we have been playing there is no backup whatsoever. I'd have thought we have budget for one more defender??

Arm thing is bull. Its about whether a fee is agreed for Smith. Just as soon as Smith signs for someone else we will be able to get this guy. You reckon? I was under the impression from DC's comments today that the Higgins deal hinges on whether Smith leaves or not. I'm not sure Turley would be affected, well that was what I would have thought.

@official_BRFC: DC confirms that Jamie Turley is a player that interests him, but the player broke his arm in the summer & would need to undertake medicals. Shouldn't think a broken arm would be a long term concern. It's not like a dodgy knee or thigh that could go at any time. Main concern would be he would have a lot of catching up to do match fitness wise as I assume he missed any sort of proper pre season.

Right I've clearly missed something here, Is this Turley signing a rumour or stronger than that? I've seen nothing other than whispers on forums and Facebook (presumably recycled from the forums).
Looks like it will be a bit of a coup if true but I'm not sure how people can start discussing what position he will play in when he isn't even our player yet... weren't we very close to a signing last week, even the official twitter confined it, yet even that fell through.
Let's hope we are more successful with this one!
